After WWII there was a development of institutions that had goals to rebuild infrastructure and prevent a war like this from happening again. The key idea of hegemony also became very prevalent, because the United States became the head of previously stated institutions, and gained political and economic power over countries not included in post-WWII institutions. One case that this idea is linked to is the case of multilaterism. More specifically, the UN and the Bretton Woods institutions highlight this idea of multilateralism being pushed during this period of re-order. One reading that illustrates this process is Wade's Hegemony and the World Bank, which explains how this institution was created after WWII and its effects to this day.

Chloe

Jared

Nancy

Discourse is a system of representations with repeated narratives and power dynamics. It is never neutral and can change over time, it is very flexible (affects our lives and shapes our world). This is linked to colonization in the way that colonizers thought that what they were doing was saving the colonized and helping them out. However, looking back we understand how this idea has changed and has shifted from what was the narrative of the time. (Ksenya, Chris, Sofia Gilmore, Olivia F.)

Haiti's double debt is defined by the moment in history after the Haitian Revolution when the French banks declared that they would go to war with Haiti unless the Haitians paid back money. The first part of the debt was paying them back and the second was the cycle of debt they were stuck. Key concepts and ideas that this links to in class are colonialism, the ideas of "The West and the Rest" and formal institutions. I would reference the Hall reading because it discusses how the West often takes advantage of "developing countries." I would also reference the Hopewell reading because it emphasizes how wealthier countries take advantage of others through the economy.

Sofia Gilmore

However, they are still listed as a developing country so they are able to receive the special and different treatment. Their per capita income has been rising for years and it puts their status into question.

Linked Key Terms: "free" trade, trade protectionism, uneven development, hegemon's dilemma, and US hegemony

Related Cases: US hegemony and the World Bank

Top Countries by Exports Graph (Lecture 8)

China as a Developing Country (Lecture 8)

Resources: "US Hegemony and the World Bank: The Fight Over People and
Ideas"

"China and the WTO: A Twenty-Year Assessment"
