Even though his theory was unbelievable then, this didn't mean his idea couldn't be built off of by future radicals. In doing so, he embodied the principles Emerson wrote in his essay "Self Reliance", especially in the aspect of being a "nonconformist". Mcandless disassociated himself from society despite it opposing how most individuals operated. This made him seem deranged to many others, but this was not the case. Because his mindset was different from most, he wasn't truly understood. This also leads into another part of Emerson's work that is "to be great is to be misunderstood". Mcandless' thought process was so unique in the sense that material possessions were of no importance to him.
