Posing Problems that Matter

Students need problems to solve that they are really invested in. This does not mean they need to be real-world examples, however. A problem that matters is one that intrigues and pulls students in. It could be a puzzle or a pattern, in addition to problem that address issues of social justice and other real-world situations.

Groupworthy tasks are tasks which actually require the help of every group member. Each member has a prescribed purpose such that the task cannot be completed without them. They draw upon multiple abilities and increase equity among group members. In addition, they encourage students to think outside of themselves and learn that their peers have valuable thoughts and input such that learning math together can be more valuable than learning math alone.

Adapting Tasks to Appeal to student MMKB

Every student comes with their own unique community and home-based mathematics knowledge. As teachers, we must have the freedom to adapt mathematical tasks in such a way that we can draw upon these experiences. A big part of this is addressing previous student misconceptions that stem from their MMKB, as well as aiding students in the discovery of multiple solution strategies for problems, drawing upon their MMKB. Teachers can appeal to students MMKB by rearranging and omitting lesson components. Particularly, omitting questions that prescribe a specific solution path, and rearranging lessons to put the heavier problem solving questions first, instead of last. Teachers can also adjust number choices in problems as a way to differentiate instruction, and be a proponent of multiple strategies and representations to encourage students to build upon their MMKB to solve new problems. Finally, making authentic, meaningful connections to students real-world lives is a way to appeal to their MMKB. This means more than just posing a problem that is real world. Rather, it involves problems students are invested in solving and have/ are actually experiencing. A possible way to do this is to have students find a mathematical idea in their lives (i.e. where do you see similarity on an everyday basis) and write about it.

Facilitating Collaboration

Norms are front and center when it comes to encouraging and facilitating collaboration. Students must learn how to work together and learn to value each other's thinking. They must be provided tools (i.e. sentence starters) to work productively with one another. Teachers must also work to tear down status issues using tools such as group worthy tasks to encourage collaboration and positive interdependence. Moreover, teachers need to enforce norms that keep the teacher as "the guide on the side" using strategies such as only group questions being asked to the teacher, only one person per group being able to ask the teacher questions, and participation quizzes. It is important to remember these may be tough to enforce at first, and there may be pushback from students. However, the benefits far outweigh the negatives!
