Write about what concepts you’re now able to express in Spanish:

I learned a lot more than originally anticipated in Spanish II, especially concepts that are helpful in the day-to-day life. Although we covered similar concepts in much simpler terms in Spanish I, I felt like there was so much more to learn that I thought. Beginning with school, I’m now able to express my daily routine (peinarse el pelo, ducharse, levantarse...) what classes I’m taking (el coro, el calculo, la biologia…), what the classes are like (exigente, energetico, pesado…) and what I do as an extracurricular (la natacion, hacer la gimnasia, levantar pesas…). I’m able to describe my apartment life in a similar way; I can tell you what chores I do (dar de comer al gato, quitar el polvo…) and what I use to do the chores (la escoba, el trapo..) I’m also able to describe my family, even my extended family (el bisabuelo, el nieto, el padrino…) and what they like to play with (la muneca, el muneco, el tren…) and even what our jobs are (la ninera, la artista, el voluntario…) I can also tell you my favorite foods (las fresas, la empanada…) and where to find them (el restaurante de comida rapida…) ! Lastly, I can describe my shopping trips. I can describe what I bought (el boso, el paraguas, la bufanda..) by color (azul marino, caqui, crema…) and where I bought them (El Rastro in Madrid...), or even how I paid for them(en efectivo, la tarjeta de crédito, el cheque personal)!

English/Spanish comparison

I did some research for this one because I can think of differences because they are different languages, but I wasn’t exactly sure how to put it into words. While researching, I found that English is a Germanic language (meaning it originated in Europe) while Spanish is a Romance language which causes a lot of differences in the punctuation and the structure of the sentences. The English language is also much less predictable than the Spanish language because we have a very predictive language. In Spanish, you know what the subject is or who’s being talked about because the conjugation is specific based on this. English has a lot of phrases that the definition changes drastically based on the context ( to go, to be ). Lastly, you will notice that the adjective in a sentence is after the noun, for example; ‘el bolso azul’ when we would say ‘the blue purse’.

What's interesting about the Spanish culture?

What I find most interesting about the Spanish culture is that their circadian rhythms are completely different than ours. Typically we start our day with eating breakfast around 8 or 9 am, which we consider the most important meal of the day, then we eat lunch between 11 and 1 pm and eat dinner around 5 or 6 pm. In spain, they consider lunch the most important meal of the day, which is eaten around 2 or 3pm. They do not eat dinner until roughly 10pm which is crazy to me because I’m usually asleep by 9pm since I work early in the morning. I found it interesting that they are known for stronger coffee, the majority of Spaniards drink coffee too, and like it stronger. I also thought that the fact that many famous artists that we read about in history/art books, like Picasso, are from Spain!

If I continued to study Spanish, I would like to learn how to flirt in Spanish. Now this sounds silly, but I think it would be interesting to get an idea of how that would be. Is it the same as we flirt in English? Is there a big cultural difference between Spain and America? I think the way we flirt changes so frequently it’d be interesting to get an idea on how that changes by culture. Considering that social media is a thing used world-wide, and we flirt over social media, wouldn’t that render our flirtatious patterns to be more similar?

Me gusta mantenerme saludable. ¡Me gusta comer fresas y papaya y melón! Mi madre cocinaba a veces.
