Reflections on how the Grassroots Environmental Fund has impacted my community!

The Grassroots Environmental Fund Giving Circle has strengthened Roots 2Empower’s ability to serve our community. Its support helped us purchase a van, making it easier to transport supplies and reach residents through our environmental and food justice programs. The funding also helped us hire staff to continue this work. For our organization, that support has meant greater capacity to show up consistently for the communities we serve.

Serving on the Board of The Grassroots Fund has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my life! Being part of this work has deepened my belief in the power of grassroots organizing and collective action to create lasting change. I am very grateful for the relationships I have built and the opportunity to support a mission that empowers and strengthens communities across New England. Here's to celebrating all that has been accomplished over the past 30 years and to many more years of investing in communities and creating positive change together!

Reflections on my experience as a grantee and grant decision maker!

I first signed up to be a Community Grant Reader when RENEW co-founder Jeuji Diamondstone introduced me to Grassroots Fund, seeing a fit between RENEW's values and the Fund's. What keeps me coming back to Grassroots Fund is that I've been on the applicant side myself – I know what it's like to write a grant and go through that process. Being on the Grantmaking Committee lets me see what groups are working on and where I can help if their approach doesn't quite match the requirements yet, so they can strengthen their applications and ultimately get their communities the support they need.

These spaces aren't just about scoring applications; they're a genuine community of people who care deeply about big questions, and about each other.

From Being Seen to Having a Voice: A Full-Circle Journey

When we first encountered New England Grassroots Environmental Fund (Grassroots Fund), we looked at each other and said, “This organization gets it!” And we meant it. Its Guiding Practices, including Rooted Innovation, Shifting Power in Decision-making, Equity in Participation, and Centering Just Transition, reflected something we had long believed was possible: communities being genuinely seen, heard, valued, and welcomed. Here were good people doing meaningful work, and doing it in ways that honored the very communities they sought to serve. We felt fortunate, and yes, blessed, to have crossed paths.

Our journey began when SabaterLAB Foundation became a grantee. Grassroots Fund's support strengthened our Community Care Mini Clinics, expanded our outreach, and created meaningful opportunities for interns from the SabaterLAB Clinical Training and Service Internship Program (SabaterLAB CTSIP) to learn while serving alongside us. We subsequently received a second Grow Grant, further strengthening our work and connection with Grassroots Fund.

But our journey did not end with receiving support. In many ways, it was just beginning.

We first served as grant reviewers and were later invited to become Grantmaking Committee members. Dr. Ivelisse served on the Seed Grant Committee, while Dr. Julio served on the Grow Grant Committee. Talk about coming full circle!

Having experienced other grantmaking processes, what stood out was something beautifully simple: what Grassroots Fund says, it actually does. From transparency and thoughtful preparation to camaraderie, respectful conversations, and genuine sharing of decision-making power, we experienced its Guiding Practices firsthand.

We especially treasure the opportunity to participate in Grassroots Fund's first in-person training following the pandemic. It was an eye-opening and heartfelt experience that allowed us to connect personally with fellow committee members, coordinators, and organizers from different walks of life. The warmth, camaraderie, thoughtful exchanges, and genuine commitment to equitable participation made the experience especially meaningful. It was another beautiful example of Grassroots Fund putting its Guiding Practices into action, creating a space where relationships could grow, different perspectives were welcomed, and every voice had an opportunity to contribute.

What made our participation particularly meaningful was knowing that our lived experiences mattered. We were not simply speaking on behalf of communities we serve. We are part of those very communities. We share their experiences, understand many of their challenges, recognize their strengths, and carry their hopes alongside our own. Our perspectives were welcomed, and we could speak openly and confidently about realities too often overlooked in funding decisions. We were not simply given a seat at the table. We were welcomed, heard, respected, and entrusted to help make decisions that could open doors for our communities and others.

That experience continues to inspire us. We have since introduced other grassroots organizations to funding opportunities, shared Grassroots Fund's Guiding Practices, and provided grant application coaching to help others access support.

As Grassroots Fund celebrates 30 years, we celebrate the people, relationships, trust, and possibilities created when communities are truly included.

We began this journey hoping that our communities, ourselves included, could truly be seen and heard. We found ourselves helping create opportunities for others to experience that same sense of belonging, dignity, and possibility.

For us, that is the beauty of coming full circle, and we are truly humbled and grateful to have had the opportunity to contribute, learn, and be part of something so meaningful.

With heartfelt gratitude and congratulations on 30 years!

Drs. Julio and Ivelisse Sabater

SabaterLAB Foundation

I remember first learning about the Grassroots Fund in 2016, when I moved to New England to work at a Foundation that was a funder of their work - over the next six years I got to know staff both as a funder of the Grassroots Fund, and as a colleague in spaces like Food Solutions New England. Seeing their leadership evolve, both within the region, and more broadly as a participatory grantmaker, has been so rewarding! I'm honored to be able to be a part of this organization by serving on the board. Happy 30th!

Seacoast Climate Action Now continues to learn and grow thanks in part to the pillars outlined by Grassroots Fund when applying for a grant. We are very thankful for the feedback we received from the grant application process and how areas for improvement and realignment were concretely defined. It is always good to know where you are, and even better to define where you want to be. Many thanks for reviewing our application. Here’s to another thrity inspiring years!
