Who was Sarah Fortis?

Sara Fortis was born in Chalkis in 1927. A relatively small town near Athens Greece. She and her sister were raised by a single mother since her father passed away when she was 2 months old. When the Nazi’s arrived her mother and her escaped to another small village, Kurturla. They hid there for some time but the villagers agreed to hide her mother if she escaped. After leaving her mother she decided to become a resistance fighter.

Sara traveled to different villages recruiting other females who wanted to resist. Soon Sara gathered a group ready to fight and resist. Their first mission had an incredible plan. Some partisans would throw Molotov’s to distract the enemy which allowed the others to attack.

Male partisans groups were impressed by their actions and invited them to accompany them in their missions. Together the groups burned down many houses and exterminated Nazi collaborators. They also aided the men with injuries. Unfortunately, most of the credit was given to the men for the missions that were completed by the women. Primarily because most people thought women were unable of these actions.

Sara Fortis, along with her group proved to the people that girls were also capable of strong actions. Even though she isn’t recognized often she made a huge impact on girls life in the 1900s. The female partisans group showed that the women in the world can also do something and it wasn’t just the men.

As Sara Fortis learned many new things amongst the Partisans she taught the girls them too. They learned how to hold pistols and other guns. According to Sara Fortis at first they giggled and thought it was a joke that they were actually going to hold guns. However, afterwards they took the matter more seriously than she herself.

Without help from the outside it was possible that the Jews would have shared the same fate as many others. The Partisans helped the Jews in many ways. One of them being supplying them with weapons. It was very possible that the Jews would not have survived if it weren’t for the Partisans. However, other groups did help the Jews as well.

Captain Sarika

Sara Fortis was known as Captain Sarika within her group of the Partisans. If one needed anything others amongst the groups would say to them 'tell Captain Sarika and she'll take care of it'. It came to the point that they forgot Sara Fortis's name. Fun Fact: All the other girls were called by their names except for Sarah Fortis who everybody called Female Captain in Greek.

Torching a house down!

Once the female group was given a mission by the male group to go burn a house down. A simple house was the only one in the town. The girls went dressed up in villager clothes. They burned down the house with torches. Fortunately, no one guessed it was the female group of Partisans since they thought they weren't capable of such actions. However, the next day many blamed the Partisans. Many others were talking about how the Partisans came and torched the house down. Also how lucky it was that the fascist wasn't in the house when they burned it. Sara Fortis was very proud of the female groups work.
