The first was to create a 0.2-hectare dragonfly habitat at the Neram Streams in Jurong Lake Gardens. This would help researchers determine habitat factors that are necessary to maximise dragonfly diversity. These habitat enhancement efforts would also create an urban wetland which facilitates species conservation. The second objective is to study the potential for dragonflies to act as natural pest control against midges and mosquitoes in an urban environment.

Lakeside Garden is the 53-hectare western section of the Jurong Lake Gardens. Opened in 2019, visitors can now enjoy the first phase of Singapore’s third national gardens, and the first national gardens in the heartlands. Lakeside Garden was developed with a strong emphasis on nature, community and play. The garden is designed in consultation with residents while also trying to promote a sustainable and healthy living environment amidst nature. 

 

A restored freshwater swamp, Rasau Walk contains over 50 species of plants, which are found in naturally occurring freshwater swamp forests.

 

The boardwalk is is made from Glass Fibre Reinforced Concrete (GFRC) for greater durability and sustainability and the Corten steel edges gives the boardwalk and rustic, industrial look. The interface between land and water also provides feeding opportunities for a large variety of shore birds, such as the Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea) and White-breasted Waterhen (Amaurornis phoenicurus).

 

The maze also adjoins the children’s section of the Therapeutic Garden to provide young visitors more opportunities to experience the therapeutic effects of greenery, as well as help with the facilitation of therapeutic horticulture programmes for children.
