We made questions for each DOK level for our next unit and planned for our lessons to start at DOK level 1 and work up to a DOK 4 for the final task in our unit. The EQ for our unit we found was originally a DOK 3 so we amped it up a bit.

Sometimes it only takes a little added "twist question" to deepen the DOK level at the end of a lesson. Asking the: why, how come, what was the effect, what would happen if..., kind of questions. Not always effective for every student in the time available, but some kids are ready to apply and extend on their own with a little encouragement.

Maria, Angela, and I worked together to create 3 sets of the DOK 1-4 questions. We decided to use the content material we are just starting with - Native Tribes of Oregon for me and ... I can't remember the other topic they are on right now! When we finish, we will trade materials. Anyway, we found that making a good 4th grade question at DOK 4 is complicated. Not every student is ready for this level of questioning and certainly not something that could be completed quickly. Most students at this age, due to reading comprehension, would need support and guidance. Definitely something to work on!

Echoing what Dan has posted we talking in kindergarten and agreed that often it takes just a small twist to deepen the level of thought required from the students. Asking kindergartners to support their opinion, telling why this is their answer immediately raises the thought required. This also adds foundation stones for our youngest learners to prepare for the projects of future years.
Una
