It is not noble to follow orders without asking questions. Blind subservience to orders resulted in the death of the members of the light brigade in a charge that was wholly unnecessary. If the members would’ve exercised skepticism, they would’ve likely survived and been able to continue to help the war effort. Instead, their lives were thrown away for an unachievable goal. This poem did not change my view on the subject, as historical events have led me to believe that we must question orders.

War is not necessary, but it is inevitable. The way to solve problems is not through killing innocent people, but throughout human history, this is what is resorted to. This made me think about the cost of the honor the soldiers in the poem receive for going to war. They gain glory but often sacrifice their lives, but most of all their humanity.

In the past it was seen as higher ups make decisions for people below them in power and for the lower people to carry out those decisions, but in modern times people are on a much more fair level and should only carry out and follow orders if they believe it to be right

I do believe that war is sometimes necessary and to fight against people that are stuck in their ways and refuse to change their ideas that the only way to push change is through violence . The issue becomes whether or not the ideas being fought against are ultimately right or wrong but regardless war might be necessary to leave the future in the best possible hands. Only after war has concluded and time has passed willl the right side of the conflict be seen but until then war is a necessary sacrifice for the greater good. My ideas on war really had very little effect on how I read the poem as I was able to see it as somewhat fictional so that my bias wouldn’t be shown when trying to figure out the overall theme.

Events like the one described in the poem feel very far away and detached from my life because it's difficult to trace their effects. When discussing events like the Revolutionary and Civil wars, there is a direct correlation between the outcome and my life. America won the revolutionary war so I do not live under British rule; the North won the Civil War which was a step toward abolishing slavery and gradually approaching equality. Because I'm not familiar with the history of this war or the author or time period, I don't feel connected to the soldiers or the story.

If someone does ask questions, I think that shows an inability to follow orders blindly, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Nobility is based on the qualities someone has to act with strength and valor while questioning authority does not really relate to that.

I think that blindly carrying out orders is dumb but still very noble and honorable.

There are many cases in which it is, but 1940's germany proves that this is not always the case. Nazi soldiers blindly, or maybe not so blindly, killed millions of Jews. In the case of fighting for your country without hesitation though, I would consider that to be very noble. It really depends on the context of the situation.

However, poems like this one make the event more relatable and its like getting the opinions and first hand account of someone who was there when the event took place so you better understand how the people felt about the situation. Poems like this one makes the event feel more real because it is easier to understand how the people of that time felt and relate it to an event that was similar in your life.

Often times, when peace cannot be reached, someone must best the other to prove that they have the most power and such are the ones in control. I do believe that more peaceful options should always be used first and that if you can solve a problem in peaceful ways with limited to no bloodshed those should be exhausted first. But for certain situations, there should be no attempt made for peace and immediate action should be taken to seek revenge or to strike back in specific areas.

You should be able to question those orders if they infringe upon your morals. For example, during the Nuremberg trials following the conclusion of the second World War, many high ranking Nazi officials got off without the death penalty when they plead that they were simply just following orders from the top. An example of this is Pearl Harbor, because Japan dropped bombs on the U.S., war was necessary to defend our own country and innocent people.

This poem both criticizes and glorifies war. It glorifies war by emphasizing the glory and honor that comes with being a soldier: “when can their glory fade? O the wild charge they made!” However the poem also discusses the dark side of battle and how soldiers have no say in their own actions: “theirs not to make reply, theirs not to reason why, theirs but to do and die.” This part of the poem criticizes war and points out that it takes advantage of those who are actually tasked with fighting one another.

I think war is sometimes necessary to fight against people that are doing horrible this. Thinking back to World War II, the war was needed as Nazi Germany could have changed the world forever if left untouched. Another example is that you would not want to allow mass genocides to continue happening if you have the power to do something about it. This being said, war should only be used as a last resort, when all the other options are not working.

The poem doesn't necessary glorify the concept of war. It glorifies those who were killed in the war and pulls our attention to the courage of the soldiers in the Light Brigade, and not the driving forces of the Crimean War or even why they were fighting. Because the English people were so outraged by the loss of life in the Crimean War it seemed only appropriate to write a poem more sympathetic towards the soldiers and criticizing those controlling them and denying them autonomy/a voice.

In other sections the poet states that the people fighting should be glorified.

Throughout the poem, as the soldiers further dive into the war, the reader is constantly reminded that not all 600 made it back, and that those who did rode "into the jaws of Death" (line 24). This seems to criticize the war itself and its brutal outcome. However, the last part of the poem honors all 600 who went into battle, bringing about a sense of honor to those who fought, which glorifies the idea around why many people tended to fight in wars.

For example, the War on Terror or World War II were wars the U.S. was involved in after they were attacked, with the War on Terror being after 9/11 and World War II after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Sometimes, it is necessary for a country to defend themselves and seek justice for the lives and resources lost. In other times, war is necessary to achieve a larger goal. In the Civil War, for example, war was necessary to emancipate the slaves (though not all slaves were freed from the war). Though other methods beside war would have been desired, war is often the most effective way to achieve a goal. My feelings about this issue did not necessarily change the way I read this poem, however.

Nobility is a matter of perception. Especially when it comes to acts of war, nobility is determined by authority. If you do as authority sees as noble, then what you have done is considered noble. Poems, songs, biographies, and the like will be crafted in your name, portraying the tale of this perfect warrior who did no wrong, following orders to the very end. This poem affirmed this belief that a noble action is merely determined by those above you, and those who survive to tell the tale. Of course the men were considered noble for killing themselves in the name of their nation because that was the order they received. If they had not followed such an order, they would be traitorous cowards, deserving of indefinite punishment. I consider it a much more noble act to defy authority and fight for your beliefs and values despite the consequences you may face. However, since such actions would defy those in power, then unless the people in power changed, the actions would be never come close to being seen as noble.

This does not mean that it is always a bad thing to follow some orders, but in general it is important to know why you are following orders.

It really depends on one's values. If someone values trust and loyalty above all else, that person should not question what someone they trust asks of them. However, if a person believes that their actions are fully their own responsibility even if done out of ignorance, it would not be noble of them to trust someone else's orders. Basically, nobility depends on staying true to your own values.

I don't think this poem glorifies war, but it also doesn't condemn it. I think it glorifies the people involved in war. Phrases like "jaws of death" and "Mouth of hell" are used to describe war, giving it a negative connotation. But the men were described as noble, even though they are submissively charging into the "mouth of hell." I don't think the soldiers would've been described as noble/ honorable if war wasn't being glorified a little bit.

Throughout the poem, Tennyson depicts the struggle that the soldiers are undergoing and the risks they are taking. However, he does not directly praise or glorify the war in any way.

I think this poem focuses more on glorifying and honoring the people that fight our wars than the war itself, which it remains more objective on. Tennyson focuses more on the impacts of the war on it's participants, with the honor achieved and the lives lost by the 600, than he does on the actual war. In this way it feels like a more personal poem to these people rather than a general perspective on war.

As a solider you should ultimately have a conscience and some moral code but in times of war sometimes you have to do dirty work to protect the things that are important to you. The important choice for a person to make is picking the right people to follow.

With these events occurring, it is naive to think that they will sort themselves out. There are a select few circumstances where war is good because it protects and saves people under attack. Many wars, however, are unnecessary, such as those caused by a desire for expansion or those against a certain group of people.

It is noble to follow orders without asking questions. In a military setting, like the one in this poem, talking back to a superior is seen as incredibly rude, as you are told to follow orders immediately and effectively. Even though the soldiers knew in this poem that what they were about to do would have been a terrible idea and akin to suicide, no one said a word, and did what they were asked. The fact that no one mentioned this ("Theirs not to make reply / theirs not to reason why"), even in fear, is noble.

Honor the Light Brigade, Noble six hundred!" It criticizes war when the poem says, "Theirs but to do and die. Into the valley of Death Rode the six hundred." One can tell by the tone and adjectives used in these phrases wether or not war is being glorified or criticized.

This poem seems to glorify war with a few different instances. It speaks highly of the ones in the charge saying, “Boldly they rode and well” (line 23). When something is supported, often strong words will be used to show it. Towards the end of the poem it says, “Honor the charge they made! Honor the Light Brigade” (lines 53-54). This showing that there is honor in what the soldiers did and can also be seen as glorifying war.

I do not find it noble to blindly follow one’s orders. We can see this turning out poorly throughout history. For example, during Nazi Germany’s reign of terror, German citizens followed and supported Hitler and his war efforts. They did this because Germany was in a compromised state and were exited a global depression. Because of this, they did not question Hitler and his motives since things were starting to look better on the surface. This caused detrimental consequences and can be used as a reminder to question those in power. Although I would not necessarily consider it to be noble, cases of blindly following ones orders have also been beneficial. For example, if you are at a job and your boss tells you to do something, you should probably do what they say and should not question their authority. It is not necessarily a noble thing, but it is necessary.
