The Portulaca seed is a soft shelled seed and the only seed that the thin-beaked Medium Ground Finch could eat because their beaks were to tiny for the hard-shelled Tribulus seed. Due to the seed dying out because of the drought that occured and the Tribulus seed being the only seed available the thin-beaked Finches were unable to eat anything and they died. Now that there were only thick-beaked Finches they reproduced together to create offspring with thicker beaks. This process is Natural Selection.

This shows that the Mechanism of Microevolution was Natural Selection because in 1976 before the drought began the population of total finches was 751 on Daphne Major. Once the drought hit in 1977 and the damage was done in 1978 the Finch population on Daphne Major was 243 Finches. This is a sharp decrease and goes to show that all of the thin-beaked Finches died out, explaining the sharp decrease, and only the thick-beaked finches and their thick-beaked offspring were left because they were the only ones who could eat their only food source left, the Tribulus seed. Due to them being the only ones left they then reproduced and they gave the thick-beaked trait to heir offspring making the populations beak size increase which shows natural selection.

This shows that Natural Selection occured because this is showing the drought. In 1976 before the drought the rainfall average was 130mm then in 1977 while the drought was occuring this number dropped to 20mm that year. Because of this drought the Portulaca seed (soft seed) was not able to grow and the thin-beaked birds could not eat. This caused the thin-beaked birds to die off and the thick-beaked birds were the only ones left on the island. Then the thick-beaked birds reproduced the population changed to have thicker beaks showing natural selection.

This evidence shows that Natural Selection occured because in 1976 before the drought occurred when there were Portulaca or soft shelled seeds that the thin-beaked Finches could eat, were available there was plenty for them to eat and so the population of thin and thick beaked birds remained. Then after the drought had occurred in 1977 the thin-beaked birds died out so there was only thick-beaked birds on Daphne Major which increased the average beak size.
