The spies in the Civil War ranged from men, women, and even kids! These people went from side to side exchanging as much information as they could. When they did this they helped the side that they were on a lot. This was effective because as little as a battle plan or who the general is going to be for the one time can be huge help. With this information the other sides can find out what the others are going to do.

Belle Boyd was a woman that had loyalties to the South. When she was 17 she had a skirmish with a drunk Union Soldier. Once she was enraged she got to the point where she shot the Union soldier. Her way to get all of the Union information was to get along with the soldiers and convince them that she was a Union loyalty, get the info and kill them.

At the onset of the war, Webster was sent to gather information in the Confederate states of Mississippi, Tennessee, Arkansas, and Kentucky. While doing this, he developed valuable relationships with several prominent individuals in those states. He would carry messages to and from Confederate spies in the north, thereby he was able to inform Pinkerton of enemy agents in and around Washington. He would also be able to open and copy many secret letters he carried and delivered for important Confederates. This information was also forwarded to Pinkerton.
