Hello, today we would like to present our project about Vilhelms Purvītis.

Vilhelms Purvītis, who stands as one of Latvia's most popular artists, is famous for his contributions to the country's culture and art. He was born on February 3, 1872 in the village of Kārsava, which was part of the Russian Empire back then and is now in Latvia. Purvītis' childhood in the Latgale region was shaped by beautiful landscapes and rustic charm, inspiring his artistic talents.

Although we don't have many details about Purvītis' family life, we know he was the oldest of several siblings. His parents, whose names are not well-documented, played a significant role in shaping his character and supporting his artistic talents. Recognizing his talent, they encouraged him to get formal art education to improve his skills.

In 1889 he joined the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, one of the most prestigious art schools in the Russian Empire at that time. Throughout his time there, Purvītis showed extraordinary talent and hard work, earning praise and recognition for his skills. His experiences in St. Petersburg greatly influenced his artistic vision and paved the way for his successful career.

Vilhelms Purvitis, the painter who studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts, was graduated with the Grand Gold Medal. What is more, he became close friends with Janis Rozentals and Johan Valter who also was Latvian painters. They took a study trip across Europe when they finished studying. In 1899, when Vilhelms Purvitis returned to Riga, he started to give private lessons. And not only that but also, in 1919 he became a director of a Riga city art museum which today is a Latvian national museum of Art. Moreower, he was the first rector of the Art Academy of Latvia. As a result, Vilhelms Purvitis was the acknowledged leader of a whole school of Latvian paintings. In 1944, when his house and workshop was destroyed during the Battle of Jelgava, he lost many of his works. He died on 14 January when he was in Bad Nauheim. Vilhelms Purvitis was awarded with the Order of Three Stars when Latvia regained it's independence.

In the conclusion I can say that Vilhelms Purvitis was one of the greatest Latvian painters who lived during the first half of the 20th century. For our opinion, he is the most ambitious person who developed art. Thanks for your attention!
