  • After the advent of communist China and the Korean War, Truman and the US began to worry about communism spreading more in Asia. Although he was initially sympathetic toward Ho Chi Minh's communist fight for freedom from the French, this growing fear of communism led to the involvement of the US in the conflict.
  • The nature of the US's involvement in the Vietnam War during this time period was strictly monetary aid-based. No US troops were sent to Vietnam during this time—instead, the US gave France $2.6 billion between 1950 and 1964.

  • Eisenhower continued the US's involvement in the Vietnam War in a similar way to Truman. He also further articulated the reasoning behind this involvement in 1954, as he described a potential "domino effect" that would take place if one country in SE Asia fell to communism. This containment policy motivated Eisenhower's involvement in the conflict.
  • The nature of Eisenhower's involvement was also very similar to Truman's involvement in that he provided aid to the side of the war opposing communism. However, he provided aid to South Vietnam and Ngo Dinh Diem, since French military rule ended in 1954. The US under Eisenhower provided equipment, weapons, and soldiers to help train South Vietnamese troops. This marked the beginning of the direct involvement of the US in Vietnam.

  • After a few political/military embarrassments (like the failed Bay of Pigs), Kennedy appeared weak with his promise to fight communism. 
    • To renew the strength of his promise, Kennedy promised more troops to Vietnam, and then he couldn't pull out. And then he also went to Dallas.
  • The nature of involvement was the overthrow of Vietnam Leader Diem, who had once been anti-communist. 
  • Kennedy used Vietnam as a way of repairing his public image and power, whereas Eisenhower didn't want to loose access to that part of Asia (which he would have to do should it become communist).

    • Two years after the withdrawal of the US, fighting starts again, ending with North Vietnam overtaking the South and unifying the country again.
