His father, Junius, was an investment banker, and his mother, Juliet, was a homemaker. 

After high school, he went to the University of Gottingen in Germany. After studying overseas, his father got him a job as an accountant with Duncan, Sherman and Company in NYC. In 1864, JP Morgan became a founding partner at Dabney, Morgan and Company. 7 years later, Morgan merged this firm with an investment bank in Philadelphia to form Drexel, Morgan and Company. 

After years of hard work, Morgan was now known as the foremost investment banker in the US. In the 1890s Morgan became the nation's leading investor for the federal government, private industry and all railroads.

Morgan”). The company, JP Morgan Chase, Inc., is still in existence and is one of the largest financial firms on Wall Street. It is the parent company to many other  financial companies including Chase Bank, Brown & Co. Securities, and Overseas Realty Corp. (SEC).

They worked “under extremely unsafe conditions in factories, coal mines, and steel mills. Working between 10- and 12-hour days, including weekends, they were worse than underpaid” (Lippman).  The employees were required to shop from the company store for things such as equipment needed for work and live in company provided housing which was then deducted from their salaries.  As a result, the employees ended up indebted to their employers for life (Lipmann). The barbaric labor conditions gave rise to many of the labor unions and laws we see today.

Robber barons were men who made money off of disreputable businesses.  These people were often very wealthy businessmen like bankers, financiers, and industrialists (Pierpaoli).  The term “robber baron” is a very controversial topic because some people believe that these men are responsible for the improved industry, but many others believe that they are selfish and only do things for power.   It is clear that both of these sides are correct because there are two types of robber barons. Some robber barons gave back to their community by donating money or working on public projects, but others kept the money for themselves.  JP Morgan was the latter group and claimed, “‘I owe the public nothing’” (Pierpaoli).  Because of his attitude and many other robber barons like him, JP Morgan is one of the reasons that many people see the term, “robber baron,” in a negative way.

Morgan’s power grew greatly, even after he passed in 1913. One of Morgan's key contributions to society was the creation of a banking empire that is among the most admired corporations today. 
Additionally, his personality was made up of many admirable traits, the combination of boldness, common sense, ruthlessness and responsibility. “He left a legacy of responsibility in business and civic affairs and a priceless collection of art for the enjoyment of, literally, millions” (McColley).

Morgan used his power and wealth to help stabilize American financial markets during multiple economic crises, one being the panic of 1907. JP then faced backlash that he had too much power and he was accused of manipulating the US’s financial system for his own gain. JP Morgan was also involved in the Coal Strike of 1902. This labor dispute was brought up by the coal miners in Pennsylvania who fought for higher wages and shorter workdays. President Roosevelt's secretary of war, Elihu Root met with Morgan to discuss an arbitration proposal. “The mine operators...accepted the Root-Morgan recommendation provided that they could set ground rules. On October 13, Root and Morgan brought their arbitration proposal to Roosevelt, who then made it public” (Grossman).
