It can be easy to only praise the effort our struggling writers give us and difficult to point out the things they do well. We might have to look for the small things that are not "grade-level" academic when praising these students.

We want to be specific in what we complement our students on:
*Punctuation (vs. run-on sentences)
*Spacing between words
*Proper nouns (details)
*Filling the page with writing
*Dialogue 
*Describing other people's thinking
*Any descriptive language
*Inventive spelling
