The Continental System

In November of 1806, Napoleon set up a blockade to prevent trade and communication between Britain and other European nations. This was supposed to make continental Europe more self-sufficient and also to give Britain a bad time by strangling its commercial and industrial economy. However, the blockade was far too loose to keep out those pesky smugglers. That, and everyone on the face of Europe ignored it. The Continental System formally ended in 1814 after Napoleon's first abdication.

The Invasion of Russia

The invasion of Russia was Napoleon's biggest mistake yet. The alliance between France and Russia started to crumble, and instead of acting like a civilized adult, in 1812 Napoleon marched into Russia with an army of 420,000 men. Alexander I, the czar of Russia, didn't want to fight what he felt was an unequal battle, so he just burned his whole country to the ground. Because if Napoleon wanted it, he could have the charred remains. The invasion ended in December of 1812 after the Battle of Borodino coimpletely wrecked the French army.

After the tumble with Russia, Napoleon was defeated, and his enemies decided to make it worse. Soimehow Napoleon raised an army in just a few months though they where ill-equipped to fight in battle. Napolean faced the armies outside of Leipzig, the allied forces straight up wiped the floor with them, and by 1814 the allied forces started to head for Paris. Napolean still wanted to fight but his generals said no more and so Napolean gave up and surrendered, he got banished to Elba.

The Hundred Days (AKA Napoleon 2: Electric Boogaloo)

The Hundred Days is what historians call Napoleon's final bid for power. It all began when Louis XVI's brother, Louis XVIII took the throne and was immediately hated. Meanwhile on Elba, Napoleon's incompetence alarm went off and he escaped, rallying yet another army and becoming Emperor again. He was defeated at the battle of Waterloo and banished, this time to St. Helena, where he finally died of what was probably cancer.

Despite the great start that Napoleon had, eventually it all fell to the wayside. This could be due to a number of factors, but the main ones are the usual suspects for the fall of any great ruler: a lust for (more) power and an inflated ego. Napoleon's descent into failure started when he tried to strange Britain's economy and failed, and it only started to snowball when he made the rookie mistake of invading Russia. Unsurprisingly, in his attempt to take over the whole world, he made everyone mad and got them all to rip him to shreds.
Moral of the Story? Imperialism is evil and nothing good can come of it.
