There used to be a dusty chair in the very front corner of my classroom. It wasn’t anything unusual, just a chair that the teacher used to stack books on. But just two weeks into the new term, something wild happened to me and my two closest friends. And it all started with that dusty chair.

Normally, the best part about starting a new school year is the chance to spend extra pocket money on new school stationery. Last year, I bought a CR7-themed set. The ruler was the coolest thing because when I used it, Ronaldo slid across the ruler on his knees. I kept getting in trouble because every time I used it I said ‘Suuuiiiii’! Mr. Thomas wasn’t impressed. I absolutely adore school! Often, people in my class ask me for help during lessons which I love doing. Luckily, my best friends David and Lisa love school too so we always work in groups. They’re my best friends and we do everything together.

Lisa has dark, brown eyes and smooth skin and a small amount of freckles on her nose. She’s short and has a timid way of talking. She’s the slowest runner in our year but that doesn’t matter because she’s awesome at swimming. David has the wildest, curliest hair I’ve ever seen. His thick, round glasses make him look a little like Harry Potter. He’s super clumsy and is always banging into people. We are the best trio of friends you could ever ask for!

In the furthest corner of the school, our classroom sits proudly by the playground. The desks are sparkling new and Mr. Thomas would kill us if we scribbled on them! The chairs, however, are ancient and threaten to collapse each time we sit on them. The walls, which were once white, are now covered in our artwork and best pieces that we have done in class. But the door is my favourite, it looks magical and opens its arms welcoming us each morning.

It was a normal, boring day like every other, but just after lunch there was a loud knock at the door. Usually, this is just a kid or teacher looking for some LOs so nobody pays much attention. But this time it was Mr Matthew, the Head Teacher. Mr Matthew, who is very tall, always shakes your hand when you walk by him. When we saw him at the door, we all froze. He looked super serious as he walked to Mr Thomas and we wondered what the deal was. After a hushed conversation, he turned and pointed to the empty chair in the front corner of the room. From behind him came a small girl – a stranger! She had long, black hair and huge brown eyes that sparkled. She looked petrified.

“Everybody,” shouted Mr Matthew as the new girl waited beside him, “this is Sophie and she’ll be starting in 6B today. She’s just arrived from Spain so we need to make her feel at home.” We all watched curiously as Mr Matthew helped Sophie to the empty desk. I made a promise right then that I would make Sophie my friend. Just then, I remembered that I had some Haribo in my bag and I wanted to give her some during break. After all, having someone to help you settle into school is a good thing – especially for someone that looked as scared as Sophie.
