Making/Remaking Race (Block 7) by Ariel Cox

Based on the ending of the story, what seems to be Nella Larsen's overall message about "passing"? Does she approve of it? Disapprove of it? Something else? Be specific and give examples from the story as support.

I think Nella Larsen does not approve of passing because she made the view of the story in Irene perspective. I think she did this to show more of her option on this so she can speak out more about it because that is what we hear about the most. We never recevied much of Clare point of view of passing other than her mention her life. Nella Larsen really wanted to focus on Irene because she has more to say about it. Then again at Irene and Clare used there privledge of passing in differrent ways.

Her overall message is that she does not seem to approve of it. Clare takes passing to the extreme and she realizes that she can't do it anymore and she's much more happy in her own community. Even Brian once told Irene that everyone eventually comes back. Larsen seems ok with the passing that Irene does where she lets others assume about her rather than actively trying to be white.

I don't think that Nella Larson feels positively or negatively about passing. It seems like her main goal is to point out how racial issues like passing can cause problems, fights, and ruin friendships. The message of the books seems to be that black people are kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place, if they pass, black people are angry at them, and if they stay black, white people are rude and unfair to them.

I think she sees passing as a negative thing. I think she wants POC to embrace their race and that was the message she was trying to portray throughout the book. She had Irene passing but in a different and less radical way than Clare, while Clare was discrediting her own race while passing and being boarder line racist and have to go into a toxic relationship with a stereotypical white male to pass as white successfully. She also had the story end poorly for Clare, which hinted at the results of passing.

I think she advises against it because Clare, who made a whole new life and never embraced her true identity, met an unfortunate fate. I think she agrees with it more when it is used in a similar way to how Irene uses it and lets people assume she's white instead of telling others (only to blend in, add security to a dangerous situation, receive some privileges the white community has, etc). Larsen is trying to send the message that if you live a lie and are never true to yourself or community, it'll end poorly for you. She wants black people to embrace their culture, and only approves of passing if it's done in moderation with good intent.

Her message was to show the difficulties and benefits of Passing, and how it is a privilege that brings many hardships. Her book shows that the struggles of being black in today's society are not just what people see in public and how they are deeper than what most people see. Although Clare and Irene both were publicly seen as white by white people, they still had to struggle with discrimination in all aspects of their lives, even within their own homes and family lives. The story more focuses on the disadvantages and problems passing causes, so it appears that she is not in favor of Passing.

I think she feels the same way as Irene does. Passing for benfits in society that you should already have is okay, but passing to everyone is risky. She shows this by how the story ended for Clare.

She cautions individuals of the potential consequences - mentally, physically, and socially - of passing, using both Clare and Irene as examples of possible harm. While she seems to view passing in a negative light, her stance on the matter appears nuanced in that she demonstrates little concern with Irene's temporary passing to get into restaurants and other such uses of passing.

I think that in the book she offers both sides of passing, how it can benefit and then hurt you too. She mainly shows how passing creates a mess and complicates life. So she disapproves. She is making a observation about systematic racism as a whole and that it benefits no one, even those with a privilege can be harmed. By ending Clare's life and Irene life crumbling, she is showing that the system is the issue and passing only furthers oppression.

Passing made Clare make life decisions that had a negative impact on her even though in the moment they have made things easier. Clare struggled with this double identity thing because she wasn't white but she had no one besides Irene in the black community to go to for support.
