Start out by cutting a  2 liter bottle at top curve.

In the bottom part of the bottle, fill it with as clear and pure water as you can.

Next add a growing media and plant to top portion of the bottle.

After that use a cotton material and thread it from the bottom and up through the hole to be able to draw the water up into the plant. 

One the roots are strong enough, they will grow down and into the water. 

Watch it grow.

This could teach them that plants only need air and water to grow. To change this up for younger students, you could just grow a normal plant.
