Notes: Jesse

1. Reasons for wanting to join:

- They thought that if they had a dominion the government would pay $800000 to buy out all absentee landlords

- $800000 then would be worth $19 million now
- Defence
- It would be nearly the same as just the maritime colonies
- If they got into a financial crises it would be much easier to come back because they had a lot of stuff that the Canadas would want
- We have to build a railway and if we needed money from other places we could borrow the money from other provinces instead of having to go to Britain
- If they joined the US they would have had even less of a say then if they joined Canada

2. Reasons for not wanting to Join
- Odd choice of place for charlottetown conference because at the time most of the people there did not want to join the canadas or the maritime union.
- They thought they would lose control of their affairs because all of the other provinces attending were much bigger than them
- They thought it could increase taxes
- Had a very good economy already

1. mostly made of farming and shipbuilding
- if there was confederation, that would result in more trading of crops= better economy and more money
2. Joining confederation would not result badly
- Even though Canada would not help with the land lord problem, it would not hurt to join confederation
- the problem would remain the same either way
4. Why PEI did not want to join- railway
- The railway would cost a lot and wouldn't be able to run in the winter but it had the potential to make enough money in the summer to pay it off
3. If they joined PEI would be safer
- if any enemy attacked, they would send the national army over to defend
4.Having a voice?
- one of the reasons PEI joined confederation was because they would not stand alone
- they were very small, and would never be heard especially if they were not part of a big country
- if PEI joined the U.S, they would have a much smaller voice then if they joined Canada (politicians thought)
5. The Island was in debt
- If PEI joined, Canada would agree to take over PEI's debt and to give them an annual subsidy to get back on track and try to get out of debt
subsidy: contribution of money
6. The Absentee Landlord Problem
- If PEI joined, Canada would agree to buy the land from the landlords back in England, so the people in PEI could by the land
- they wanted to be landowners for many reasons. For example, only property owners could vote
