COURSE CONTENT

This course provides the opportunity to try a variety of trade disciplines. The main focus is on developing good hand tool skills and employability skills. There may also be opportunities for work placements and visits to building sites.

The first step is for a member of School staff to complete a referral form for you.

You will be given an application pack which you will complete and return, it is important to return this before interview.

The next stage is an interview. This is an informal conversation. We are interested in hearing more about you and why you want to take part in the course.

Meet the tutor, young people will be invited to meet with the training partner to hear more about the course and to take part in a group activity.

The School Team supports young people to gain the skills and qualifications needed for success beyond school, be that employment or a place in college or university.

Over the next few months you will meet staff from the East Lothian Works School team and you will have the opportunity to hear more about the service and the courses on offer.

All of the PreVoc courses are supported by an Employability Intervention Officer and they will work closely with you and your guidance teacher to support you to get the most of your course.

The course will cover :

• an understanding of the workplace and the employee's responsibilities (e.g. time-keeping, appearance, customer care)

• Child Development and Wellbeing

• Play in Early Learning and Childcare children's rights and employability skills related to current practice in working with children and young people.

  
  

The classes will be dynamic and engaging with a blend of practical experiences and reflective written tasks.

Entry Requirements :

Demand for places on this course is high. Applicants will be required to complete a personal statement highlighting suitability for the course as part of the application process.

Ideally applicants should have achieved National 5 English, or be working towards National 5 English in 2026/27.

Progression Routes :

This course is an ideal progression route to a Foundation or Modern Apprenticeship or full-time Level 6 courses such as NC Childhood Practice or PDA ESA Classroom Assistants courses at Edinburgh College.

The engineering project will promote environmental awareness and sustainability by showcasing the potential of clean energy technologies.
