Discussion: Blog Post Perspective/ POV Character

For this weeks post I decided to discuss the character Omar from the novel. So far, I have enjoyed reading about Omar and all the things he has gone through in his life since he was a child to now in the novel where he is an adult. In the novel Omar describes everything in third person point of view. Omar also goes by Umar Bin Hassan in the book and Jerome there is a lot of name change through out the book depending on the time frame. Omar is a very open minded person and he discusses through out the book a lot about his personal life. In the beginning of the book he discusses his sexual life and his love Dora. The way he describes Dora is very into detail for example "..she had small, pointy teeth and thin pink lips." (Otten 45). You are able to imagine what she would look like. In the story Omar also talks about his grandma Elizabeth and how she really did not care for him at the time. It seemed as if his family did not really care for him the way he explains it in the novel his mom, dad, grandma and grandpa and all they did was judge him. For example grandma Elizabeth says "... Maybe he is dumb?" (Otten 29) as in referring to Omar. I noticed as a child Omar did not really care about what others thought of him but once he grows up and is an adult he remembers and thinks back to all he had gone through as a child with his family. Personally I feel as if Omar is very hurt, upset and also learned a lot about when he was a child and what he went through. I think Omar remembers old times as a child and when he dose, it causes him to do bad actions like in the novel where Omar gets a gun. Over all through out the story Omar explains everything in such good detail like ".. looking at the sky the clouds were thick and white and puffy they looked like cotton balls" (Otten 31) that I personally was able to understand him through out the reading and how he felt towards certain people. Omar is a very strong main character so far in the reading and we have learned a lot about him and his background.

For this weeks post I am going to discuss about setting and conflict along with Felipe who we see is the main character in this part of the novel. Setting is where the story takes place and for this part of the novel we see that Felipe seems to be moving back and fourth between New York and California. First he is in New York and then he moves to California with his mom and then he ends up coming back to New York. While Felipe is in New York living in his broken home as he calls it he is not doing to well personally. Felipe has a lot of problems and is just looking for trouble. We see in the reading that Felipe is part of gang, he is doing bad things like fighting and killing. Felipe is a very aggressive "Asshole, muthaf****, I'll kill you, y'ugly bastard", "I yanked his cap and bashed his face with my fists, left right left right, his face was a black blotch". Felipe even ends up in jail for what his actions. His mother is disappointment and then decides to fix things by moving to California. Felipe dose not really seem to like California and only stays for a while and before you know it he comes back to New York where he then continues to be the same and stick to trouble and then gets arrested. Through all this reading we see that Felipe is going through a lot and he is having a hard time in his life and he doesn't know what to do but trouble.

In the novel "The Lasts Poets" by Christine Otten we have seen and read about how each character has his or hers different point of view but yet these characters all have something in common. The theme I would say for the novel would be learning from mistakes and growing. In the novel we first start reading about Omar and how Omar goes through some situations in his personal life. Omar is around alcohol, drugs, sexual things and his family dose not care for him, he even gets abused by his dad. Omar takes all these problems into consideration and tries to better himself. Dora is another character we read about in the novel she also has family problems her parents are alcoholics and her dad gets sexual with her. Dora just wants to get away and live her own life without anyone in it but Omar whom is her best friend. Then we begin to read about Felipe. Felipe is apart of gang, drugs and fighting. His life is complicated and Felipe is so stuck in the moment he just dose bad things and he even goes to jail for helping kill someone. Felipes mom tries making things better by having the move to another state but that didn't lasts too long before Felipe was back to normal and doing his bad things again. Then Felipe wants to change and realize he wants to be a poet. All these characters go through a hard time in their life, they all have problems whether it is with their family or just within themselves. But these characters learn from their mistakes and they are growing from them and learning from them to become a better person within themselves.

In the reading of Good Kid MA.A.D. City by Kendrick Lamar we see through the lens of historical time. We see what Kendrick Lamar goes through at the time and we get a better understanding of what he faced to making him who he is today. During the time Kendrick is involved in drugs, struggling with himself and feeling lost. I would connect this to hero's journey because Kendrick goes through a departure, initiation stage and a return making him the rapper he is.
In the reading Flower Boy author Tyler the Creator we see through the lens of historical time as well. We read about sexuality and about being who you are, no one else's opinion should matter about your personal choices. I think this is a coming of age story because here we have a protagonist who goes through experiences and discoveries about themselves and they overcome things by making decisions and they also learn from this. I think the theme here is be who you want to be. Both these readings connect to what we learned this week about hero's journey and coming of age story. The readings connect to a personal life and the struggles one goes through to then become whom they become.

For this weeks post I am going to discuss women's voice and also what we learned about this weeks lecture. We learned about a few of some female rappers like Lauryn Hill, Roxanna Shante, Princess Nokita, Che Noir and others and some
stories that they have told from their point of view based on their lives and what they have been through whether it was in there past or today. An example of these stories are domestic violence/abuse, abortion and being a foster child and what being mistreated is like. Females have to write about their situations in order to be heard. You would be surprised what a girl can write about in her lyrics and the message she is
trying to get across. The next time you listen to female signer read through her lyrics because there is a message behind
her song. I believe that the female voice is not heard as
much as it should be. This can be a conflict because I believe there should be more attention towards female rappers
today. Women are treated poorly. Women are not respected. Women are not treated equal to male rappers and they should be. Women empower each other and are just as capable of doing things that males can too. Equality is something we have to work on in the world because there is a misunderstanding of how capable a women is and what she is capable of doing.

For this weeks lecture we learned about Poetry and what comes with writing and creating a poem and literary devices. In the poem "Brenda's got a baby" by Tupac Shakur we read about a real sexual abuse story. We read about a young 12 year old female getting pregnant by her cousin. We learn about how she suffers and goes through pain. The author believes that women go through sexual abuse not just like Brenda's story, there are more females out there in the world that can relate to Brenda's story. This story was able to reach my emotions and grab my attention with the rhyme scheme the poet uses and also the reptition. This poem was also an eye opening to me because there was very strong use to lines like "A damn shame, the girl can hardly spell her name and Brenda got herself a boyfriend her boyfriend was her cousin, now let's watch the joy end she tried to hide her pregnancy, from her family." This poem was a great example of poetry and I really enjoyed reading this poem this week.
