https://padlet.com/CSUCI/cause From Sean: I remember the day when this lanky kid came loping into Bell Tower West. "Hey," he said with a grin that stretched from ear to ear, "I'm Cause." Less than a minute in I knew we needed to pull this brilliant, energetic young man into our orbit. By the time we parted ways maybe an hour later Don Rodriguez and I were already brainstorming ways to integrate him into our crazy rollercoaster of a University. We never looked back. Our time with him was too brief, but the ripples from that day still echo and reflect off everything we do. From the Departmental Christmas card image of Cause and the rest of our faculty in ugly sweaters that looks down over our lab daily proclaiming "Still Family" to the students who always (and I mean ALWAYS) ask "who is this Cause dude?" and "wow, what was the story of that Cause guy?" when they step foot into our Research Station, his light shines a strong and steady pulse across everything we do. The dragonfly flutters by and smiles; our friend remains. When his diagnosis came and he had to bow out, I thought we would cancel this four day pilot trip with my Coastal Management students. But Cause was so insistent that we not and that we go ahead with the class that we ended up going. It ended up being a fantastic trip, with Cause’s ideas and spirit in everything.  I remain so sad I couldn’t share this last adventure with him, but everyday we wore our “here Cause of you” shirts and he was with us.

Every time I wear that tshirt (about once a week) I smile as I think about my friend and what a cool nut he was. 

We are all better for having a good Cause along for our journey.

Only time I ever met with him to talk, and I did not walk away disappointed and discouraged. I immediately called the Biology chair Amy Denton and implored her to give this guy an opportunity. Amy had an opening for an ecology lecturer which started Cause’s CI career. When the Island Research Station was created, we didn’t have to look far to find the perfect person to direct the station. Our hiring committee was unanimous in our support for Cause and his incredible spirit. He facilitated so many transformative experiences on Rosa during his tenure he solidified our presence on the Island. From my very first arrival, which I was honored to share with Cause, Tracy and Sol, on a tiny airplane, Cause showed us the best the island had to share. He was always leading, out in front, and never let us doubt that we could go down to east beach and back at a brisk pace. Every challenge was an opportunity for adventure, to learn, to shine. Every dock welcome, with his warm smile, made everyone feel welcome. He really created a venue for life changing experiences for so many people. I first met Cause when I assisted with the hiring of the station director. We took all the candidates out to SRI that day. It was obvious to me that Cause was the one we should hire.  My first student trip in to SRI Fall 2013 was also the first _official_ use of the bunkhouse-- we double checked the procedures and instructions, as there was no staff out there. Note- the hot water heater instructions were incorrect, but we figured it out. Whether assisting with class trips, student capstones, or discussing parenting, Cause was an inspiration. He truly was interdisciplinary in his thinking, and I was grateful for his support of cultural resources, and the need to keep them in mind when planning other projects.

Cause and Tracy were so welcoming and gracious to us! We were definitely more high maintenance than any student group, and they were so kind.
