Janie's nanny the arranger justified it by praying to God for Janie to be taken care of as she was old. Janie’s nanny did what she knew best as she wanted to give Janie a fighting chance at being financially stable.  Janie did try her best to fall in love questioning her nanny stating “But Nanny, Ah wants to want him sometimes. Ah don’t want him to do all de wantin’.” (Hurston 55). She elaborated how his feet were smelly and there was no love in the air. During the 1930s Janie listened to the nanny and followed through and proved that arranged marriages do not work. Still, prevalent to this day arranged marriages do not work. Janie's main goal was to find true love and find a man that wanted her as much as she wanted him. While being with Logan, she ran off and married Joe Starks because he promised her affection and love stating “De day you puts yo’ hand in mine, Ah wouldn’t let de sun go down on us single. Ah’m uh man wid principles. You ain’t never knowed what it was to be treated lak a lady and Ah wants to be de one tuh show yuh. Call me Jody lak you do sometime.” (Hurston 62). During the 1930s it was a more common practice of arraigned marriages based on Janie’s decision to divorce arranged marriages are not in the best interest of the women's hearts as they were never truly happy. Today women’s voices are heard, and they are far more independent with their personal choices. Women have more power and do not need to depend on a man to succeed. Pre- Arraigned marriages do not work in modern society as women have more rights and can support themselves.

She loved Jannie so much she only wanted her to have a better life than herself. Nanny had come from a life of hardship and only wanted the best for Janie. She knew if she married Logan she would have a life of full stability, protection, and security from his 60-acre potato farm. Nanny did not take into consideration for how Jannie feelings would play out in this marriage.  Jannie tried to see the best and make it work till she could no longer be with a man she could never love. pre-marriages do not work you cannot force someone to fall in love with another person because they will be financially secured. Nanny's heart, wanting Janie to have a secure life was in the right place but she never stopped to think about Janie feeling on love and wanting to love and be loved. After the marriage to Logan, she married Joe Starks till he died. It wasn't till she married Tea Cake that she learned what true love was and she was at her happiest. In today's world women are stronger mind, body, and soul, they are not afraid to voice their beliefs and opinions they are financailly stable, where they no longer must depend on man for financial support.  There for they would not allow someone to force them into an arranged marriage. ]]> 2023-04-10 16:58:51 UTC https://padlet.com/sharonrowland/x7fo79cfp5d7jo86/wish/2549034821 arranged marriages do not work (for the most part) - Aleyna Lencioni https://padlet.com/sharonrowland/x7fo79cfp5d7jo86/wish/2549102124 Arranged marriages remove the personal autonomy of the partners that make up a marriage. Though I do recognize that in some cases arranged marriages are a necessity, such as if a woman is living in a place and/or time in which her wealth depends on a male partner. However, in modern society arranged marriages are worse than they used to be, since now women can make their own living for the most part and one of our most valued aspects of partnership is the fact that two individuals learn who the other is and build a trust that wasn't there before, this is almost entirely lost in an arranged marriage. Two individuals do not make compromises of their own will but rather because they know that this partner is the one they're, in most cases, quite literally stuck with.
