Example: World Cup 2022 in Qatar

1. In 2005, Qatar was drawn as the host country for the World Cup 2022. Qatar is one of the richest countries in the world because of raw materials. But the country is not at all known for its good football or football culture. They are practically irrelevant and stadiums are nowhere near as developed as in other possible countries in the world. Because of this, more and more guest workers from Nepal, India and Bangladesh have been flown in to help with the stadium construction.

2. The BIG problem in this case are the working conditions for the workers.
- Since 2014, 6,500 guest workers have died working in Qatar
- There are countless workers who have not received any money from their employers for at least 8 months.
-The workers' living space averages 15 square meters for 8 workers. The conditions of the residential complexes are terrible, there is only dirty tap water and bread.
-The guest workers often see that working in other countries is an opportunity to give their families a better life. The payments in Qatar are little, but at least more than at home.

3. The politic in Qatar plays a big role in this situation, because since 2012, there is a law, which allows the employer, to get nearly any control of a guest worker and is allowed to pay him under the minimum wage.

4. The whole thing is much worse, however, because since some of the employers have stopped paying them for months and confiscated their passports, they are exposed to the situation. This is against the law, but the rich population of Qatar is very corrupt and just wants a nice World Cup, while poor families are destroyed every day.

In the past most clothing brands produced clothing in same country.

↓

But after World War Two global trade increased and clothing production started to decline in Western Europe or the US.

⇒ Today only 2% of clothing bought in the US is manufactured there.

↓

It shifted from small, family owned companies to large international companies with rising demand for products and cheaper labour elsewhere.

↓

They mostly produce in developing countries now and sell their products for a lot cheaper.

People work there under horrible working conditions in extreme poverty.

⇒ A worker at a Chinese factory makes 14$/ 270$ a month.

⇒ In America they would get 88$ a day/ 1 760$ a month for the same work.

Because of the cheap prices people overconsume clothing and fast fashion rises, so not only people but also the climate suffers.
