"'All right. Who wants Jack for chief?' With dreary obedience the choir raised their hands. 'Who wants me?' Every hand outside the choir except Piggy's was raised immediately"(23). The boys are starting to establish a sense of authority; something that Jack and Ralph have trouble agreeing on. Each boy thinks they should be chief, but this leads to fighting over who is more important.

"'You're talking too much,' said Jack Merridew. 'Shut up, Fatty.' Laughter arose. 'He's not fatty,' cried Ralph, 'his real name's Piggy!'"(21). As the boys are learning each other's names, Piggy becomes a victim to the other boys' cruelty. Not only is he picked on for his weight and appearance, he gets made fun of for worrying as well. The boys are most likely going to split up or form alliances somehow, but it is already happening by them singling Piggy out.

"'Nobody knows where we are,' said Piggy. He was paler than before and breathless. 'Perhaps they knew where we was going to; and perhaps not. But they don't know where we are 'cos we never got there.'"(34). Although most of the boys are confident in their hunting and survival skills, Piggy is the only one who seems to be afraid and more conscious of their situation, and the fact that they are stranded.

"'I got the conch,' said Piggy bleakly. He turned to Ralph. 'I got the conch, ain't I Ralph?'"(45). Piggy is again treated unfairly by the others on the island. Anytime he has to say something that could be important, someone tells him to shut up and the others laugh. This could lead to Piggy eventually turning against the boys, or him not helping them when they need it.

"'Well. They're frightened.' He rolled over and peered into Jack's fierce, dirty face. 'I mean they way things are. They dream. You can hear 'em. Have you been awake at night?' Jack shook his head. 'They talk and scream. The littluns. Even some of the others.'" (52). The younger boys are starting to realize the dangers of the island, and are becoming more scared of what they don't know, like the 'beastie'. This could lead to bad things that are yet to come for the boys.
