The author makes connections between the reader and his story based on what a war can do to people that have relationships with the “enemies”. The brothers in each team are forced to fight on opposite sides during wars. This shows how war can tear families apart and cause friends and families to lose touch. Although the two brothers love each other, they are involved in a war and they are forced to kill, just like the Sniper and his brother are. One brother in each story dies, and the one who is left alive would feel terrible guilt.

The story shows that a piece of human curiosity. In need to understand and connect with the enemy, is present still. The Republican sniper proves himself to be not totally violent. Because of the rush of joy, he feels the need to kill his rivals. After he gets the energy rush and adrenaline, he knows his rival is a person, and the killing of a person is a waste. The Republican sniper is overcome by his sense of the dead enemy snipers, that would feel the need to see the man that he killed. The war then does not completely cause the sniper to lose his sense of humanity.

2. The message that the author is trying to get across is how war dehumanizes people. Having your family on the other team that would fight till death against, is something you should never have to happen to you. In the story they said “Then the sniper turned over the dead body and looked into his brother’s face.” Having killed someone and turning them around and seeing it’s your brother is horrible. He is wounded by the opposing sniper's the Free Staters. He tricks the other sniper into shooting again but this time at a false target. He is successful. The story is dehumanizing the two because they are fighting for death not knowing that their brother is who they are fighting.

Although both The American and Jig had different views on the abortion happening, they always fight against it because they rarely ever agree on anything thoughout the story. The American is focased towards Jig’s abortion, and thus Jig is caught up in an internal battle of whether she will please her man or if she will choose life for her unborn child. This shows humanity because she isn’t just doing what she believes is right. She's viewing his side but disagrees. Lastly, if she was selfish and wasn’t open to hearing his opinion there would be no humanity or question. With her being open to hearing his side shows her mankind because of how shes reacting to his view.

Alcohol holds a certain amount of symbolism in the story. The two main characters, "Jig", and a man that they called "The American" are sitting in a bar. The pair order drinks, and they also talk about them. Though, the woman in the story is pregnant, she still drinks. They disagree on most topics that they discuss and they usually are never on the same page. The American is bent towards Jig’s abortion, and Jig is caught up in an internal battle of whether she will please her man or if she will choose life for her unborn child. Throughout the story, The narrator showed how big of a role the beer and drinks had for this story.

The story connects to the reader often throughout the story. A curtain blowing across the table holds a important part to the story. After they stop talking about alcohol and right before they do begin to talk about the abortion, the curtain blows across the table. I thought that this is symbol of the curtains is really like a brick wall has just come up between them. Their opinions on the topic will be on each sides of the wall. The man, who is against having the child, tries to make it seem like he doesn't care. The woman says in a calm manor, that she wants to have the child. The wall between them plays a large role in keeping them from really speaking their minds about the abortian and make a decision together. However, it is not just the wall that keeps the couple from coming to a conclusion, or even seeing each other's real opinions. They lack basic communication skills.

When she was young she thought it was the most peaceful, harmless, and the best thing ever. She came to change her mind when her eyes were snagged by a man whose head was no longer attached to his body and bleeding everywhere with a lynch next to him. After this event, she never went out and looked at the farm, picked flowers, or anything. She realized her understanding of life was completely wrong and she now has to deal with this life that is just so horrible and disappointing for her.

Myop's family lives and works on a farm by mention of their sharecropper's cabin. This detail also helps create a sense of the time as sharecropping came about after the American Civil War during the Jim Crow era. The theme of the story is loss of innocence. The story began when myop very young. She didn’t have a worry in the world. The narrator talks about the first sentence, “the days had never been as beautiful as these.” She collects flowers and even goes her own way along the stream. Then the times changed. She was snagged by a dead man that was lynched. She noticed his teeth were all broken, dead was separated from his body. She now never walks around the field because of how brutal she now thinks the world is.

The author makes connections between the reader and her story based on how Myop believes the world is perfect and how she overcomes her knowledge of what the world is really like. Myop walks through her family's sharecropping farm. She was moving around "from hen house to pigpen to smokehouse," singing and playing with a stick as she goes. She always picked flowers. That's what made her feel peaceful and happy. She got so excited and happy when the corn and other things they grow are ready to be picked. She gets an excited "little tremous to run up her jaw" whenever she sees the crops that are ready. Lastly, she goes into talking about the harsh reality of the world. When she was picking the roses, she realizes the truth, the man was being hung and the world isn’t as peaceful as she thought and hoped it would be. This is similar to “Miss Brill” because once the young couple tells her she's useless she becomes lonely again. Once Myop realized the man was dead, she realizes how awful the world is and how its the opposite of what she originally thought it is her whole life.

Keeping his dad out of trouble is more important to him then having himself getting drunk.

With him taking his dad's drinks it gets rid of these problems that he has to deal with when he gets caught drinking by his wife because she doesn’t like it. This shows the length that son will go to just to protect his dad because he loves him so much. With him being an alcoholic, both his son and his wife know that he shouldn’t be drinking, so they punished him for when he gets caught drinking.

The Connections that the author makes between the reader and his story was toward how the kid feels about his dad being an alcoholic and having his younger kid to have to see his dad drunk all the time. The kid wants nothing but for his dad to stay out of trouble and get into arguements with his wife because the wife hates when he comes home drunk. This then leads the kid to start taking all of his dad drinks in order for him to stay happy and safe because of the consiquences for if he gets caught. Again, this shows the kids feeling towards his dad. He connects that back which leads the kid to do the right thing and take the drinks in order for his dad not to be able to get drunk anymore.
