A) The theme of marriage comes up again in the text a few times aside from Effia's marriage to John Collins. A couple of chapters later, Ness marries another slave. Her marriage, however, unlike that of Effia, was meaningful to her for a number of reasons. She felt safe with her husband, and they felt comfortable escaping with each other and raising their child as free people.
