Collection guavollection

I started with pictures of fruit on the floor. Smashed guava all over my daily home-to-ebac route. Then we were supposed to bring our collection to the class. “How am I going to do this?” I thought. I knew I didn’t want to take the pictures. And yes, I did make an instagram for them. And I liked it. The pictures were interesting and beautiful the way they were. But I had this idea of making the fruits. Since I wouldn’t bring them to class, I needed to create a feeling that resambled how I felt when taking the pictures. If i simply brought them to class they would get all rotten, smelly and it would be chaos. So I got some high school papers I had and started painting them. The first ones I made eith no tape. But the wet paper would unfold and get into this weird shape. I knew this invenction had a weird direction but I didn’t want them to look THAT weird. So I taped lots and lots of paper balls. Mixed the paint. I had yellow, green and pink. Pink is actually only in the insides. But I had this liberty, I painted them the way they were on the floor. Some were not ready to eat, so they were greener. Others were perfect but someone had stepped on the poor fruit so the yellow exterior and pink inside were togheter scattered on the floor. I had loads of fun. And they turned out so pretty. I got crazy with their colours and shapes. So by the time I was done I had over 150 fake guavas and wasn’t sure this was a real collection. How could it be? I made it all with my hans, I didn’t actually collect them... So I sent some messages to friends from class, and Leticia reminded me that Michael (hey there) said you could present it in drawings. So I felt confident. My beloved fake guavas would have a purpose after all.

I got an interesting feedback. I was insecure enough to put my phone on instagram beside my guavas. So people said, and this is a quote, that “the pictures spoke for themselves”. The thing is, work wasn’t the pictures, it was the things beside it. Second display? No phone.

Q&A

Why did you do what you did?

I made guavas because after moving in to São Paulo, on my first walk, I saw a bunch of them on the sidewalk. And I’ve seen them everyday since.
     2. What were your different approaches through drawing?

I first made this boring watercolour. Then I made a bigger painting slashing the ink. Then a black and white piece.
     3. What didn’t go very well? Why?

The first one didn’t work because it was too dull. The ink what too light and the drawing it’s wasn’t really creative.
     4. What went well? Why?

After feedback, I got more confidence to really rethink my collection. I made the splashy paint after that. I got bolder.
     5. What would you do differently next time?

I would organize myself better. I didn’t make everything I wanted in time.
     6. What feedback did you get?

I talked with Ana and Solange about everything. How I saw my work since the beginning, and how I thought them to be. What their proposals were. I didn’t know if I was to draw my collection (the paper balls) or the inspiration (the acrual fruit). It was a very interesting conversation.
7. What does this feedback make you think about?

Made me think about how many ways and different points of view only one piece of work can offer.

First ones came out blend, but after seeing other people’s I got some ideas and could create more confidently. Pedro painted blue and green on yellow paper. But the blue turned out as a different shade of green, and it was great. The colour of the paper changes the paint. I remake my stencil to make the negative of it so the outcomes would be of my liking. Different tecniques learned then mixed. Fun day.

They are detailed with stripes, so there was a discussion on whether it eould work after scanning. So on sight I made the capital letters more complex (because they are larger) and the lowercase letrers were simpler with a black detail to make it more understandable. The program was a bit off though because it pixelated the letters more than I anticipated. I also started building my sculpture for tomorrow to keep it on the clock.

I needed to simplify my design in order to facilitate the process and to obtain a better result on screen. The website apparently had some issues with it too because I couldn’t finalize the building and printing of the letters. I have bought the materials and started sculpting my letter for tomorrow‘s task.

Building a S of soap bars. What a creative idea! But creative comes with a price. When my eyes could only see the rectangular form of the soap bar I was scared. I needed to be very clear to cut off the letter. I started drawing on my notebook just so I could plan it a little better. I also halfway sculpted had to create a new set of tools in order to archive the results I wanted. I covered a wooden spoon that was in the studio with scraps of foam from other people’s works. I also made a tiny bit os soap paste so I could glue the blocks togheter. By the way, what was placing those blocks together? So difficult. I first planced them in a box of water, then I filled a spray with water and pumped a litle before sticking it togheter. Bad moves. The letter was collapsing. And I needed it stiff so I could carve. I decided to smooth the surface while I was thinking about what to do next. After a little I had my salvation. The little pieces of soap I carved could be used to make the blocks stuck for a little longer.

Great powerful work was presented today. Me and Julia really got into this project and we made it about my family’s friend and beloved recently assassinated counsilwoman Marielle Franco. It has been almost a week since she died and I’ve been really sad about it. Mostly becaus now she is th Human Rights Dead Lady, and I was scared her brutal assassination would overcome her life story. I started with the word democracy, then changed it to “voice”. This week was hard to post on padlet but my work is so deep with feelings that I don’t feel the need to explain myself further. Other students also appreciated it, since all the information about this case is largely politicized, when we created a empathical narrative.

Curators have a very specioal job. Today I had the opportunity to see in first hand a language in photography. Julie’s work got to a point where colours in different pictures were the same or very close. She has habituated herself to photograph since early age. Henrique got pictures of people in the street. He was brave and capture very intimate moments in portraits. My work such as Julie’s had a pallet of it’s own. In the afternoon I picked acetates and rubbed them on the floor to creat a scratchy surface. Learned I shouldn’t do it much since it turned the once transparent surface to a complete dirty blur in which you can’t see. And seeing at least a little is essential in photography. I also painted it with different colours and pens. Later on tried to scratch with scalpel but the result was too controlled.

I decided I was going to do something with democracy, since the death of family friend and now know Human Rights activist, council person Marielle Franco. That is particularly emotional for me since I knew her. And I am far away from my hometown Rio and I cannot manifest along side my activist peers back home. This project came in a very special time. I chose to do something more serious and to not rely on my personal feelings because they would turn the work in to a rage manifestation, and I didn't want to associate those feelings with Marielle. I got to discuss this with my tutors and we decided "VOICE" would be a good narrative for the job. I got some inspirations with posters from the 70's (black panthers) because they have one that is also about the death of a companion. Black panthers are known for the rage and violent outcomes, which is not all bad, but do not fit my thoughts on how the audience with perceive them.

New developments are of the performance. Print making wasn't as good because of the little details that had to be put on it. It was fun turning the collage into a print because I got to create on top of it. I was thinking it had to be 100% accurate but they didn't need to be. Nor couldn't. So when I made the cuts I almost redrew the face from the collage and with this cutting technique it had a different feel. I got to embellish it with little turns that were only possible to invent because it's a print. Nice rethink of structures. I solved the problem with the details by making a second layer by hand in pen. Turned out nice but if I tried harder I could make more inventions such as the first layer.

Today we made a device for camera. Out job was to build it with a photographic filter. I started by constructing an acetate structure in which I plug the filters and can change it easily. My filters were mainly just colour, and I made it so it could function as a temperature fixer. I regret not creating a better adjustment system for distancing the filter and lens so the focus is clearer. When I use more detailed filters the pictures turn out a big blur.
Besides filters I also made a triangular box sealed with aluminum foil. I made a tiny hole in one of the sides so it could work something like a camera obscura. But it didn’t work well because it wasn’t completely dark inside. But I took good pictures anyway.

Dado was a great event in downtown São Paulo. Great intelligent people sharing their ideas, worries and hopes in art world. Stefan Benchoam is an artist and entrepreneur of arts in Guateamala. He said how hard it was to create an economy for arts there. Made me think of what I wanted to do in my hometown. He also talked how important collaborations are for this economy to evolve. Also about collaboration, Vanessa Carlos, (creator of Condo, which is a event that happens simultaneously in various countries), said how important it was and not only between artists but also between young galleries. It is all part of an effort to make artists that otherwise wouldn’t break through the big capitals bubble.
In the afternoon we had Monique’s presentation were I had many ideas for week’s project. One of them is using different and real objects and photocopy them to make it a 2D form.

Having 30 ideas in 30 minutes was a peculiar exercise. Once you are 10 draws in, you stop thinking a bit and go sort of automatically. I'm still deciding whether my project will be a zine or a video. I had two ideas for this project. One is a history were all the characters are mouths. It would have more of a visual appeal than a story properly. The other is a bus tour guide that shows all the negative aspects of the city. It may be an animation, because I'd make a luminosity moving according to the bus circuit. I'm afraid it's too difficult to do.

In the first part of the day, we were asked to organize our ideas. I putted mine in topics, and it really helped with deciding with one I'm going with. It's the bus one. I had thought about it much further than the mouths one. But I still wanted to do it. Like when on television there are the commercials, and it sort of divides the story in two segments, I wish I could put them in the middle of the bus story. But it's not possible since the main story needs all the pages available for the zine. I think It would cost too much and neither one would turn out good enough.
In the afternoon we had this workshop and learnt how to animate and other tools on photoshop. I'm thinking of doing an animation now. I'm less afraid of it now that I have things figured out. And I'll probably mix loads of techniques since I have experience with stop motion and with it I can focous more on developing the visuals than animating.

On our group crit I got some reflexions. Is a critic thought the opposite of a funny one? Because my work is a social critique with non-sense humor. I am afraid I cross the line with the jokes. Also took notes of recommendations for others that teachers Cezar and Daniel gave. But I got from them was photographer Nick Waplington and he is genius. Besides working with fashion designer Alexander McQueen (also a genius), he got this acid sense of humour that really helps with what I'm trying to achieve. I got to know the term "white trash", that inspires me for some characters on my film.
Afterwards we had a printing workshop, which was good for me because I may create some patterns for composing the set of the animation, but was wonderful for those going for the actual zine.

Today I got scared because I had planned today to be the day in which I photograph everything so I'd have time to animate calmly. But in the worst case I'll just turn it into a zine. I had to repaint my maquette so on film the cardboard box prints don't show. Also had to cut down some personages to make time menagement more realistic.

Illumination is key to animate in stop motion. Once I made one without this care, and it was visibly horrid. Today I got two lamps because when I was using only one the background wouldn't light up properly. I got some difficulties that I have shared. I don't know if I'll have time to animate. In any case I'll turn it to a zine no problem. Only a bit of frustration. Also got help from Solange that has experience with videos. She had the idea of putting sort of a skeleton with wire so the character would stand firmly on different positions.

I am still struggling with the set. I got two light on photography studio, and a tripod for my camera. The chromakey wasn't 100% illuminated so the shadows on it may be a problem when editing. In the afternoon, Leopoldo and Solange both helped me and suggested I made it flat on the table. They gave the idea also to photograph and print out the bus, (which is made with a cardboard box so it is big) to fit the background more easily. It worked.

Today is the day that I''l get every photo I've taken and animate them. On a previous course I used Muan animation app but in school's mac lab they have more sophisticated applications to do it. I don't how to use them but Alex Afonso is here to help. He instructed me to rename all the files in numerological order so the app would interprete and go. But it didn't work so I got a little (much) desperate and got Gabriel Lyra (genius) to help me. Turns out the file's names were wrong. So all the trouble was solved by adding a zero to each pictures name. Funny if not tragic. Also happy because I struggled so much with timing and everything turned out fine. Made a zine in 0.5 seconds (not really) and it is so good. I saw Baruch's work, (he's making an animation too) and he made a QR code on his zine that redirects people right to the animation link. He also said he will make stickers. And now so will I.

Presentation day. Final adjustments and table setting. All the physical materials I made throughout the week (that I though was for nothing) served as a beautiful arrangement for my table. Particularly, my work stands out. I am very proud of all the problems coming at me and I dodged them all. I got to a conclusion: freaking out is not useful at all in those situations. Now is just waiting for my stickers come out from graphic and buy some last clothing for the outfit I'm wearing today. I'm going as a represent for the Lilith Trips Ltda. Also made an instagram account for it. And an email. What for? Can't say. But looks good on the flyer.

I got crits from Isabela and she actually was really helpful. She told me that in my video, the main character doesn't show. Lilith, as the main character. But that is debatable. The video show the tour bus going around town, and it is a character. But anyways, Lilith does not show. And not for a decision, but for a lack of technical skills. That was an obstacle throughout the whole project. Also said that the display on the table is good. Mentioned positively the multiple techniques I used to produce everything (from flyer to video itself).
