He has completed only one of four drawings for homework and is already behind on work in class. He needs at least 3 more lunch periods to catch up. He told me he can't work in class due to distractions and would come during lunch. However, he did not come. Coming during lunch should not be a reason for not working in class. He needs to communicate with me if there are specific problems he is having with his classmates so that I can help him.

Hi Mrs Hamel, I am sorry that my reply is late. I spoke to Austin about this and at first he said he had already completed the work prior to reading what you messaged me, he changed his story and said that he can't do the work in class and he needed to do it at lunch period. He further stated that you won't allow him to bring the work home so he can complete it which I find suspicious at best. I told Austin he needs to complete what he is behind in and to do the work in class and stop making excuses for not completing the work. Please keep me updated. T. Kennedy

However he was unable to return to work with the partner he wanted to from yesterday because that partner and another student nearby felt Austin had been a distraction yesterday. Fortunately he did work by himself with no redirection needed.

CC - 0
WC - 3
WA - 2
WS-3

Hello Mr. Kennedy, I am Austin's teacher for CCR this semester. Today was our first day together. I am looking forward to working with Austin. We spent most of the period discussing rules and behavior expectations. Austin kept calling out and talking while I was talking. I explained to the students that each day they come to class, they walk in with 12 points (3 points for each of the four categories listed above CC,WC,WA, and WS). If they misbehave or don't follow an expectation, I give a warning; if the behavior doesn't stop, I then start deducting points. I record the points on BCPS One as "non-graded" along with letters (CC, WC, etc) to indicate where points were lost.
If points continue to be lost due to misbehavior throughout the week, the consequences become more severe, such as lunch detention with me, phone call home, or possibly office referral.
Today as a "getting to know you" activity, students used Play-doh to make something representative of themselves to show the class. Austin made a gun and said he likes to shoot things.
I appreciate your support (and this padlet for communication). I do look forward to getting to know Austin better as the semester progresses. Feel free to email bkoch@bcps.org or call if you'd like to discuss anything further at any time.

Kind regards,
Briget Koch

I wish I had a better answer for you, I can't motivate him as hard as I've tried (punishments, taking away all electronic devises) I know that he pretty much dislikes anything about school, so he answered what he feels. Austin does not like to go outside he pretty much stays in the house does not interact with his peers as much as I have tried to get him to go outside, he and I spend a lot of time going outside to play. I will have him do HW club 2/2/17 maybe he can work on it again. TK

He listened politely and attentively to the directions for today: They had one class day to work on a "vacation" itinerary to a Spanish-speaking country and written in Spanish. I provided Austin and others without them computers to use, which were necessary for the project. After 10 minutes or so, as I was answering questions and ensuring all were on-task, Austin was "checking his grades" and I saw BCPS One open. He did this last week as well so I removed the computer and asked him to sit quietly and not disturb others. He responded well and did as I asked. When I went to log him off the computer after class, I saw he was also looking up images of I think of Sesame Street characters. The project is on his class calendar and due next Friday.

On my first visit to him he said he didn't care if he had help or not and didn't seem to be concerned that nothing was correct. The second time I checked in with him, he said he would like some help and we reviewed the instructions and the model answer. It seemed to click and he redid the quiz. I just now quickly looked at his answers. He seemed to start off pretty well but then again didn't follow the directions. It won't be a good grade but I greatly appreciate his attention to the work and accepting help. I also told him how pleased I am with how he's been doing in my class.

Austin again earned the privilege to use a computer in class. He wasn't fully committed to the task and I don't think he accomplished as much as he could have. Most significantly, when I checked on him a few times he was NOT on any websites UNRELATED to the project (as he had been previously when using a computer). Good week!!!

Thanks for your message. Due to all-day PARCC testing, students went outside for a break during this class. Mrs. Burch has been busy with managing school-wide testing, so we haven't had a chance to talk about the incident. Austin did well playing with other boys outside today.

Not my conversation or issue, but from a third person's perspective this is bizarre. With all due respect, your methods of "teaching" students is horrible. Kids don't develop behavioral issues just because they feel like it. Has it ever struck you that perhaps he had issues had home? Self-hatred? Bullying? Loneliness? Why isn't it enough of a reason to get mad when someone pisses you off on purpose? To the Austin's parent, has it ever crosses your mind that perhaps the "victim" intentionally struck a sensitive spot to get a reaction from him? It's easy for adults to tell students to ignore it but that's not how it works. In real life situations you're seen as a pussy and all respect for you is lost. Not to mention the rumors that get spread. You're now the school's personal punching bag, emotionally or physically. I'm not expert, and I certainly don't know anything about you or your child. But this is going to take you no where. Silicott, if I am understanding this correctly he called a student an asshole because they used the door you told them not to? The language he used is less than ideal but how could you punish a kid for being on your side?
Lengthy talks won't work. Neither will beatings, punishments, and removal of electronic devices. He's not a little kid who needs to be reminded of his duties. He knows, just chooses to ignore them. Yelling and trying to forcefully make them to their work not only increases their hatred for it, but also the teachers, the students who are able to do it, and mostly importantly YOU. I'm a student who excelled in all her tests and report cards. I gradually got frustrated because of school and home issues, and instead of someone asking me earnestly if I was okay, I was labelled to have "behavioral issues" and my entire family was notified. On top of that, the counselors and principal who I got along with well turned on me and threatened to drop my classes from dropped from GT to Standard. What kind of adults are you if the only way to help a child is by punishing it? Detentions, talks on how what they did was bad, punishments. Not to mention how Austin was probably an outcast. And before you tell me that the guidance counselor tried talking to him let me tell you, it's extremely hard to find a counselor who actually gives a shit and isn't following the scripted lines they learned back in college. No kid wants to open up to them. Also I noticed you only seem to talk to Austin to reprimand him. That's extremely unhealthy and toxic. Talk to him about things other than his school life.
Wow Silicott, the kid was looking up Sesame Street characters. He's commit a crime. Cut him some slack, at least he tried to do the project. Even minimum efforts should be noticed and encouraged. And by that I don't mean the classic, "Good job! I hope you're able to finish it by Friday." or "Wow, it would be great it you bring this type of energy to class everyday!" Just an earnest compliment that doesn't include any big talk. Tomorrow's class can be addressed tomorrow. Talk to them based on the grade level they're at. "Woah, the animations you added to that slide looks cool." or "I didn't know that template existed. It's fits perfectly with ____". The small things matter.
Nonsensical behavior. That's one way to put it. It may seem "nonsensical" to you Ms, but have you tried to actually get to know your son? The teachers tell you everything he does, but have you ever asked him what he did? And no, I don't mean the fights or the disrespectful remarks. Something on the lines of, "I heard _____ event was today. Did you have fun?" or "You didn't understand the Spanish lesson? Well truth be told I don't know Spanish either. Even though I'm not much help, let's both sit down after dinner and try to crack that assignment." Motivating someone is not the same thing as continuously punishing them. There are other ways. For example, if Austin loves playing soccer, try to use it in your daily life. "Well think of group projects as a game of soccer. You can't make it to the goal by yourself, right? Plus you need an offense and a defense. If you don't participate then sure, you'll get the grade but you won't feel accomplished. Sometimes you fall and bruise your knee while on the field, but that's all apart of becoming a better player. It's better to have teammates who can't help you up once you fall. It's lonely when it's just you. So try to be a little less mean to the ones around you, and you might just be surprised on how close you get." I would try to give an example of Football, but frankly I don't know crap about the sport. But still, try to involve the few things he cares about.
To me it seems like Austin has trust issues. Rightfully so, seeing how you sent his answers to the survey to all his teachers and guardian. Forcing him to take the survey is quite cruel, don't you think?
I see in the beginning of the school year other teachers put in their 2 cents as well. "I visited him during Spanish and pointed out that I cannot offer him a safe, quiet place to go during lunch if he is going to be disruptive in class. Tomorrow is a new day!" Wow. The kid already hates your class and you tell him that. Now I'm in no way whatsoever trying to validate all of his actions but sheesh, it seems like everyone is more focused on trying to get him to complete his work than to actually make him learn and trust you. Last time I checked, telling them straight up that you're not going to help him anymore isn't how you gain someone's trust. That optimistic comment at the end doesn't help any, mind you. Also, sugar coating it isn't hiding the truth Ms, I don't know what you're trying to achieve here.
This discussion took place 4 years ago, so I don't expect a reply honestly. But still, the teachers and the student were both wrong in more ways than one, and I feel that it's about time everyone should accept it. Well, this is just my opinion so take it with a grain of salt. Have a nice day~
