(Parris 29

RESPONSE: Parris is rudely demanding that Mr. Corey finds a wealthy man for her. She states that she feels that she is being punished by living in poverty. Parris feels that while she left to follow the lord, that the Devil is playing a role around her. She does not deserve to be in poverty and believes she is above that level of people. A wealthy man is more important to her than working at poverty level. Parris feels that her standards aren't being met.

Quote: "If she starts for the window, cry for me at once" (Miller page 16, Act 1).
In this quote, Parris is telling Abigail, his niece, that if Betty gets up and "fly's" over to the window that they need to get him really fast. This tells us that he believes his daughter is has been acted upon by magic. It also tells us that he truly cares about his daughter's health and well-being. On the other hand, this could also mean that he wanted to make sure that if she where to fly over and out of the window that someone was there to stop her that way none of their fellow citizens seen her "flying". This shows us that Rev. Parris is either self-centered and only cared about either him and his families reputation or he actually cares about his family.

Quote "I have seen some reddish work done at night, and I can make you wish you had never seen the sun go down!"
Response - The author of The Crucible, Arthur Miller, uses a fine selection of words to build suspense and emphasize what Abigail is meaning. By saying "I have seen some reddish work done at night," she is referring to when her parents were killed by the Indians, because of this, she knows how to be violent. We learn the true motives behind Abigail's actions from this quote as well. She threatens the girls with violence to keep them in line and to get them to agree on a story to protect herself. She also makes them believe shes might know some real witchcraft to scare them even more.

(Miller page 15 Act 1).
Response: In this quote by the character Mrs. Putnam to Parris, it shows that the putnams want justice for their dead babies. From what we know about them Putnams their justice is actually vengeance. This quote shows that the putnams are worried for Ruth since she is the only one to live. This gives off a concerned and tense tone in the setting of parris's home. (72 words)

(Miller 4)
Analysis: This quote tells us that the Puritans valued their religion over everything else. The author, Arthur Miller, is trying to let the readers know that the Puritans had to keep their religious reputations good. In order to do this, they prayed a lot. Even when they had "vacations" or time off of work, they were expected to spend much of their time praying. This would show their loyalty to the church and to God. Also, in the time of the witch trials, if someone didn't go to church or pray, they were very likely to be accused of witchcraft. Praying lots and keeping up their reputations gave Puritans a sort of "insurance" protecting them from witchcraft accusations.
Word count: 118

You'll only be whipped for dancin', and the other things!" (Miller, 18)

Marry Warren speaks up for what she believes is the right thing to do. I think that Marry feels guilty about everything that happened in the woods. Abby wants to lie about the witch craft and won't tell anyone what really happened. This made me realize that Marry and Abby are two very different people. What I believe happened is that at the time Marry thought it was a good idea and maybe fun to do witch craft. But now that she is starting to see the consequences, she realized it was wrong and the truth needs to be told. Abby on the other hand keeps telling people that they were just dancing and having fun. She doesn't realize what could happen if she keeps lying.

RESPONSE: Rev. Hale is an expert on witchcraft and is the minister in Salem. This applies to the theme of power for both Rev. Hale and the devil himself. Based upon the the society they lived in, the fear of the devil and hell is everywhere. Anything that is not right or out of place is blamed on witchcraft and the workings of the devil. Rev. Hale's books are the only power of good that Salem has. Without Hale's books he would be nothing and the teachings of the devil would strengthen even more. This can be compared to the world today because there are many churches around the world that show us how we Christians can be saved and make us strong enough to forget about the devil's works and stand up for ourselves and live in peace with God. We don't have to live in fear like the people of Salem.

(Abigail 19)
Response:
This quote from "The Crucible," by Arthur Miller, is just one of the ways Abigail Williams is indirectly characterized in this novel. It shows the way Abigail tries to control the other girls. When Abigail says, "...let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you..."(Abigail 18) it leads me to believe that Abigail's personality is aggressive, manipulative, selfish, and bossy. It also describes that she is trying to hide the fact that she lied about drinking a charm to kill Proctor's wife. People often try to lie and hide it, without letting others know. In this novel, Abigail has lied and the other girls know that she is lying about the situation. These girls know the truth. Abigail threatens to stab the girls if they "spill the tea" about the truth of drinking blood. Her snobby attitude is revealed through this quote. This gives me a very suspenseful feeling about Abigail because it makes me feel as if she will make a very important impact on the rest of this novel. (204 words)

This introduces internal conflict with the desire to attend church and the effort required to do so. It also introduces external conflict between Proctor and Parris and his preaching style. Miller also uses the words hellfire and bloody damnation to help the reader visualize the negative atmosphere of the church service where as Proctor would prefer a positive atmosphere in which God is regularly mentioned.

Quote from Abigail:
"Now look you. All of you. We danced. And Tituba conjured Ruth Putnam's dead sisters. And that is all. And mark this. Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you." Page 19
Analysis:
This really shows Abigail's true nature. She will not take responsibility for what she did in the woods. Abigail knows what will happen to herself if someone tells what they did in he woods. This makes me feel like Abigail might end up killing someone eventually in the end of the book, or Abigail is killed for witchcraft. This reminds me of threatening my sister if she'd tell on me from breaking something. This quote kind of puts the reigns on the entire thing in the woods the night before. It shows that Abigail is basically like the leader, and made the other girls drink the blood with her. The quote to me shows how nasty Abigail is becoming in the story, it shows me how malevolent her actions might be in the end. A theme this speaks to me is the repetitive theme of power in this book. Everyone is out to get power in some way, and Abigail's power is becoming fear. All of the girls involved are going to fear her because of how crazy she is becoming.

Miller, is just one of the ways Abigail Williams is indirectly characterized in this novel.

In this quote Proctor is saying his time and energy is not worth the long walk to barely hear the mention of God.
