In junior high, although I never told anyone, I was bullied regularly. I suspect Mr. Kawakami knew about this, because he always allowed me to hang-out in his room, or tutor other students. He always found ways to make me feel special and safe, by engaging in conversations about my interests, and modeling kindness and respect with everyone. His high expectations for appropriate behavior were clear to all students, and when someone broke the rules he intervened in a thoughtful but confident way. His practice continues to serve as a model in my own teaching. Thanks Mr. K!

Math has never been my strong suite, but my pre-calculus teacher Mr. Johari made learning math much more than abstract equations on the board. His teaching style, and his personality, intersected with my interests in a way that allowed math to suddenly be much more accessible to me. He brought each and every one of his students a personalized scroll from Egypt when he vacationed there. He often told us anecdotes of his childhood in his native Singapore. We really got to know him as a person, not just a teacher. I've never met a teacher who cares more for his students as humans (and not just math machines.) Even today, Mr. Johari lives in Singapore but when he comes back to the Bay Area, he invites all of his former students (and that's a lot!) to a big dinner where we catch up over Pakistani food. He continues to ask about our lives, meet up with us abroad when we travel, and even give us gifts. He inspired me to travel, to be kind to others always, and that math is dynamic, multi-faceted, important. Not only is he a gifted math teacher but he is a kind, generous, and outstanding human.

When I was a college student, I had a professor who had a fixed mindset. I didn't recognize it as this at first, but looking back at my time in his class, I can see how his perception of failure effected my own mindset when trying to figure out my career. I ending up not pursuing photojournalism as my major after having him as a professor because I was convinced that my photography skills were just not cut out for the profession. I am a product of this situation because now I am able to better understand the importance of modeling a growth mindset to my own students so they don't shy away from challenges.

My second grade teacher, Mrs. B, was incredibly welcoming and friendly. She held us to high expectations, while allowing us to explore by making mistakes. We were each assigned a state that we were responsible for researching and then creating a hat based on what we had learned. At the end of the unit, we all performed the state song in front of the school wearing out goofy hats- which was a lot of fun- even for a shy/stage-frightened kid like me!

In high school, I had a teacher named Mr. Baxter. He was a very admirable teacher and person. I was a pretty shy student and didn't raise my hand a whole lot, but I knew a lot of the answers he posed for the class. Mr. Baxter had just transferred into our room after our substitute English teacher had to leave, so he began to learn everyone's name at this point. He figured out that I was a shy person and began to call on me by pronouncing my name "correctly," rather then it had been pronounced my whole school career to that point. It made me smile and it really propelled me out of that shyness and into the realm where I was raising my hand and giving my opinion, no matter if I was was wrong or that my opinion might differ from all of my classmates. Mr. Baxter not only helped me overcome my fear of raising my hand and having the wrong answer, it also helped me form friendships with classmates during the rest of my high school career, as I conquered my shyness.

In my credential program, I had a teacher do an activity with our class that was very eye-opening. He would project a statement up on the board and if the statement was true to ourselves, we would take three steps forward across the imaginary line and if the statement did not apply to us, we would take three steps backward. The statements were highly personal, such as, "I felt I was bullied regularly in grade school". Students only admitted to what they felt comfortable sharing with the class, but the activity was memorable because it showed a lot of our judgements of others were not always true. Some students turned out going through challenges that you would never guess by looking at them. It taught us all that we all come from different backgrounds, with different experiences and you can truly never judge a book by its cover.

One of my favorite teachers in elementary school was my 4th grade teacher for a number of reasons. Not only, did she make learning inside the classroom fun and interactive, but she took an interest in the personal lives of each of her students. She took it upon herself to schedule a casual meeting with each of her students and their families outside of school. I remember her coming over to my house for dinner and looking through old photo albums together. We had an opportunity to get to know each other in a different environment which was very memorable for me.

My high school anatomy teacher was the first teacher I had that allowed student-directed learning. We would be studying a certain system of the body but it was up to us how to find and learn the information. Most of the students in the class did not take the class seriously because of this, but I took it to heart. I have always loved learning about the human body and how all of the different systems work together. I would often stay after class and talk with him about what system we learned about that day.

One memorable learning experience I had was during a lesson on pollination. During the lesson, our teacher acted as a flower and wore a big flower hat. The teacher held two bowls which acted as the parts of the flower which are involved in pollination. As a class of "bees" we were each given a puff ball (pollen) and had to drop of and bring back a new puff ball to a set of cups behind us labeled "Honey comb." As an added bonus, we were timed as a class and expected to shout out each part of the pollination process as we ran the relay. It was memorable to me because we as a class were working together while the teacher did nothing but wear a flower hat. This was hilarious to me at the time. The debrief left us with a great feeling about the process because it ended with us eating honey as we reviewed what we learned.

She had a really memorable science program because she was extremely enthusiastic about the subject and used a lot of hands on activities. She wanted her students to experiment in the classroom and encouraged that by allowing for a lot of open-ended exploration. She had very high academic expectations for her students - she was known as "the hard teacher" - and really expected everyone to push themselves. But she paired those high expectations with lots of support and constructive feedback. She was also sure to genuinely celebrate success when you finally got there. I always felt like she knew me as an individual and was cheering for me.

My favorite teacher was my band director, Mr. Gomez. He encouraged each of us individually, to do our best and participate in outside musical groups as well as band during school. This encouraged us to stretch ourselves and our abilities. He was always positive and kept his patience, even when it was Thursday before the football game on Friday and we were not ready!

My favorite teacher is my "transpersonal psychology" teacher from high school. He taught me how to be conscious and self-monitor myself, my emotions, and my thought process. These skills have helped me profoundly in not just my teaching, but my life in general.

My Professor Dr. Guha who was also the head of department during my credential program was instrumental in fostering a love for education in general. Apart from teaching strategies she taught us valuable skills that became proved to be so helpful to me during my first year of full time teaching. The encouragement, advice and support she gave to all her students has left an indelible mark in my life.

(I was home schooled until HS) My favorite teacher was my American Sign Language teacher Mrs. Chaves. I had her for 3 years, and she was the best. She made learning something we all wanted to be a part of, she helped us become a community. Her classroom was a haven. The learning came easy because of this. Kindness always; she was always kind.

My mentor teacher used to rely heavily on establishing classroom procedures and routines at the beginning of the school year. This made instruction and day to day activities much easier to manage since the students became familiar with the procedures and expectations to the point where they became habits. This helped him teach his lessons and do activities with the kindergarteners
