Family : Picornaviridae

Genera : Four types of genera which are Aphthovirus, Cardiovirus. Enterovirus and Rhinovirus but HAV is closely related to the genus Enterovirus.

Prototype species of HAV: Different strains of HAV have yet to be demonstrated. Suggested prototype: CR326. Diagnosis
This test is used to help diagnose a liver infection due to the hepatitis A virus (HAV). There are several causes of hepatitis and the accompanying symptoms, so this test may be used to determine if the symptoms are due to hepatitis A.


A few different versions of the test may be used to detect different classes of hepatitis A antibodies.

  • The HAV IgM antibody test 
  • The HAV IgG test detects the IgG antibodies that develop later in the course of the disease.
  • The total HAV antibody test detects both IgM and IgG antibodies and thus may be used to identify both current and past infections.

In acute hepatitis, other tests such as bilirubin, liver panel, ALT, and AST may be performed with viral hepatitis tests to help diagnose the condition.

Human can also get infected if they:
  • Eat fruits, vegetables, or other foods that were contaminated during handling
  • Eat raw shellfish harvested from water that's got the virus in it
  • Swallow contaminated ice

Hepatitis A virus is an icosahedral, linear, positive-strand RNA virus that lacks an envelope.     Virus found in blood and enter the bloodstream which may spread to the liver. they reproduce in liver , enter the bile and released into the small intestine. this is why the faeces so infectious.
