All hepatitis viruses cause liver disease. Hepatitis A virus is an icosahedral, linear, positive-strand RNA virus that lacks an envelope. Icosahedral has 30 edges and 20 equilateral triangle faces with five meeting at each of its twelve vertices. Both have icosahedral symmetry. The term "regular icosahedron" generally refers to the convex variety, while the nonconvex form is called a great icosahedron.

Positive-strand RNA virus: Also known as a sense-strand RNA virus, a virus whose genetic information consists of a single strand of RNA that is the positive (orsense) strand which encodes mRNA (messenger RNA) and protein.

Hepatitis A virus (HAV) is a member of the picornavirus family.HAV shares the key properties of the picornavirus family: an icosahedral particle 28 nm in diameter with cubic symmetry, composed of 30% RNA and 70% protein. Like other picornaviruses, HAV possesses four major polypeptides cleaved from a large precursor polyprotein. HAV has no envelope and replicates in the cytoplasm. HAV is stable to treatment with ether and acid, and is much more heat-resistant than other picornaviruses. There is no antigenic cross-reactivity with other hepatitis viruses.
