Who we allow to document a place can define how a place is culturally placed within its' surroundings. Would we view Africa differently if the world map was upside down, and it pointed upwards, dominating everyone? The answer of course, is yes. The reason for its' position in a standard world map currently is political; the mapmakers of early colonial Britain wanted England to appear large, central and dominating, to reinforce its' global power. 

In these examples, what is central and dominating can tell us about the political and personal circumstances of the mapmaker. If somewhere appears edging off the page, added on later, or only half connected, this often indicates a lack of importance for the map-maker. Even in modern maps, you would never find central London on a crumpled corner of an A-Z or on the middle crease. Its' importance is indicated through its' position.

Often we think of a map as a concrete definitive diagram of a place, but even if this is the intention, no map can escape an element of imaginative manipulation. Symbols are created from a need to communicate a memory of the place, and often a place's relation to its surroundings also shapes how it is mapped, and places cannot exist outside of their context.

In my own work, I need to define how I can map through memory, rather than mapping a memory in itself. I think this will assist in my illustrative boundaries, as right now I am finding it difficult to structure my pieces and create a sense of purpose.]]> 2022-11-30 21:10:40 UTC https://padlet.com/emilydavies2499/x6qpd6nd97qe4sh0/wish/2404224818 emilydavies2499 https://padlet.com/emilydavies2499/x6qpd6nd97qe4sh0/wish/2404226284 All three of these examples of mapping focus on pictoral symbols. Translation of symbols is often universal, such as the heart shape being widely recognised as suggesting love. Some symbols however have become lost between creation and discovery, such as the lines and numbers found on stones, such as the example on the left. 

However, regardless of whether the original meaning is translated through these marks, the illustrative intention is clear; the marks indicate a human life with a desire to be remembered, their movements to be tracked, and their life to be mapped. 

The missionary map uses symbols to illustrate follklore, myths and beliefs in the world, not only marking out the mapmaker's space in the world, but indicating a fear and mysticism about the unknown.

The link to the white horses is obvious here - etching symbolic marks into the landscape. There is a sense of nostalgia, especially in the map by John Held Jr on the right, which is created by choosing a limited palette of colours and using them in flat layers without blending. This is evocative of screen-printing used in traditional printed posters and children's books before digital printing was widely used.

Both methods of mapping zoom out and look at the landscape from above, and utilise a stylised perspective to capture the most significant elements of the landscape. It is useful to note the differences in aesthetic despite a similar approach. Held Jr focuses more on the man-made buildings in the landscape, winding the paths and canals around these features. Whereas Ricketts seems to do the opposite - drawing the imposing river and piecing the land together like a jigsaw around its' curves, which can be seen from the rough draft at the bottom of the page.

Not only does this reveal the artists' personal geography within the space, but it also poses an interesting question of how nature and humans interact when mapping a place; what takes precedence, why is this, and can the two forces exist with equal importance within a map?]]> 2022-11-30 21:12:52 UTC https://padlet.com/emilydavies2499/x6qpd6nd97qe4sh0/wish/2404226614 emilydavies2499 https://padlet.com/emilydavies2499/x6qpd6nd97qe4sh0/wish/2453908421 Paolozzi essentially applies the filter of scientific illustration to his personal artistic expression. The visual language he uses is monochromatic, utilising fine lines and differing mark-making to variegate tone as shading. The inclusion of letters as labelling instantly communicates the scientific context, and the abstract yet limited composition is almost exclusive to informative diagrams and maps. Cajal would hunch over the microscope, drawing while observing, letting the pen map out the tiny world of the brain’s neurons.
