The film Dead Poets Society highlights the themes of Walt Whitman's poem "O Me! O Life!" Mr.Keating teaches his class how to transcend. He shows the boys the importance of poetry and they study the works of Whitman, Thoreau, and other Transcendentalist writers. Keating emphasizes "carpe diem!" Neil and Todd and all the other characters learn about themselves as they consider what it means to be a part of the "powerful play," and what their verse will be.

Walt Whitman writes, “That the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse.” Each person has the ability to contribute their own verse. My verse will be the love I have for others. The impact I have on those around me will carry them through their lives and inspire them to create their own verse. My friends, family, and other loved ones will be lifted up and carried by my love. The impact of my affection will outlive me and will become my legacy. My declaration of self is that I will impact the world through my love, which will affect the lives of people who will do greater things than I will and will change the world, outliving all of us.
