With the 21st century being so technologically based and advanced, it is essential for students to be exposed to and skilled in this area so that it can benefit them in their future, instilling skills needed for students to prepare them for the digital world (Schone,2015). As the need for technology to be more incorporated in the education system, online learning options have become more encouraged in higher education.

Online learning options alter the dynamics of higher education teaching by altering the programs that they offer, research practices as well as their approach to teaching (Schone,2015). Consequences of the digital divide in the classroom include students not having access to digital technologies, being unable to comprehend and understand lessons being taught in the classroom missing out on the enhanced learning process and increased learning opportunities intended by the digital technologies being incorporated in class (Howell, 2013)This affects the teaching process as educators have to be aware of the digital divide and how to work around these disparities whilst making sure each student receives the same learning process and lesson intended.

Ensuring that each student has access to the digital technologies needed for work as well as incorporating technological lessons on how to navigate through information and how to perform applications required for lessons can aid in ensuring the digital divide doesn’t affect the learning process (Schone,2015). With technology being the material that improves learning it can also be utilized to improve teaching as it allows educators to continually improve the repository of their lessons, improving the educational experience of students.
