Family and Education are two of the main core values of Vietnamese culture. There are many instances of family being very important throughout the novel, however the most common is when we see characters adoring their ancestors. For example, after Bich and Nan moved out of the house even though they sold everything related to Tan's ancestors, she still spent a ton of time restoring the home and buying more tiles to make the ancestor home pretty again.

This quote is about when Hung wakes up in the middle of the night and leaves to go wandering around. She passes the blind beggar, and ends up running in no general direction- just running. She ends up at the mouth of the sewer where a pile of trash has gathered, unable to pass through the grate. hung begins to play with the trash and imagine the origin of each piece. Soon, her Uncle comes up behind her and tells her to stop immediately. He asks her what she is doing playing in such filth. This can be connected to the theme of money. Chihn is very money conscience and cares a great deal about how other people view him and his family. Even though Hung is doing nothing wrong, her Uncle cares so much about how other people in the village would view her and then how that would reflect on him.

The girl who is not named is one of Hung's roommate. She had a sewing machine, but she can't find it in the spot she swore she put it in. She accuses her roommates of stealng it because she vividly remembers placing the sewing machine in the spot it is no longer in. She does not stop to think about other possibilities, just jumps to the conclusion that one of them must be responsible. She and all the other roommates start to search for the sewing machine. Hung's other roommate finds the machine in a different spot, and immediately the girl starts to blush because she now remembers putting it there.

Hang is connecting the dots because she remembers her memories while shes on the train. She often thinks back to her childhood and young adulthood in Vietnam. Most of her stories involve the two most important and prominant people in her life- Aunt Tam and her mother Que. She does this because family is so important in Vietnamese culture.
