The concept of "achieved status," which refers to a social position that an individual can choose or earn through hard work, was developed by anthropologist Ralph Linton. It represents individual talents, abilities, and efforts and is the antithesis of assigned status. Achieved status for me is having a master's degree in Human relations. An ascribed status is a social status that you didn’t choose and is usually given to you from birth. Ascribed status for me is I am a white female of Polish descent.0

Group conformity and how it affectedd my life

Conformity can be defined as the tendency to align with others around us. When we conform, we modify our behavior or ideas to match those of the group. Conformity has advantages and disadvantages. It may be advantageous since it fosters harmony and order in society. However, it can also be detrimental when people stop thinking for themselves and conforming, which has negative effects. Wearing a uniform to work or school, keeping up with current trends in fashion, and choosing a conventional career path because it seems safe are some examples of conformity. I have had several times when conformity with a group has affected my life. When I was 15, I was hanging out with a group of popular kids. To fit in I started smoking cigarettes. I smoked for fifty years and could not stopped. One day my doctor got the results of my chest x-rays. I had cancer. I had to go through chemo and radiation therapies. What I thought was cool at 15 almost killed me fifty years later. Nowadays research shows that people who smoke have decreased by 65 percent. Just because you think something is cool does not mean it is right for you to do it.
