On the island of Berk, there live Vikings who are constantly at war with dragons. The dragons try to steal food and constant blood is shed in the battles between the Vikings and dragons. The war between them has lasted over 300 years with no sign of ever stopping.

Hiccup is the scrawny son of the chief and is scorned by everyone because he tries so hard he screws everything up. So to prove himself, he is going to kill a dragon. But not any dragon, the one no one has ever seen before, let alone killed; a Nightfury.

Hiccup manages to hit the Nightfury with a weapon that downs him. After he finds the dragon all tied up and defenseless, he doesn't have the heart to kill him. Instead he sets the dragon free, and in turn, the dragon chooses not to kill Hiccup.

The Beginning of the Adventure

After Hiccup's dad, Stoick the Vast, lets him join dragon fighting lessons, Hiccup goes looking for the Nightfury. Once he finds the dragon he is curious about him and eventually earns the dragon's trust. Hiccup names the dragon Toothless and the two become friends.

Road of Trials

1) Hiccup realizes he injured Toothless when he hit him with the weapon, and Toothless lost part of his tail, which prevents Toothless from being able to fly. During one of his dragon killing lessons, Hiccup learns that a grounded dragon is as good as dead.

2) To enable Toothless to be able to fly again, Hiccup tries again and again to make a replacement tail. The only problem is that it takes Hiccup to control the invention and let Toothless fly, so the two work together until they are the perfect team.

3) Since Hiccup is spending so much time with Toothless he learns some dragon secrets that make him excel at his dragon killing lessons. A girl in Hiccup's class, Astrid, notices and gets suspicious. After Hiccup accidently wins the honor of killing a dragon in front of the entire village, Astrid follows Hiccup and finds out about Toothless. Toothless and Hiccup work to convince her not to tell anyone, and succeed.

Hiccup is supposed to kill a Monstrous Nightmare in front of the entire village, including his Dad, but when he tries to show them dragons aren't monsters, the dragon snaps when Stoick scares it. The dragon tries to kill Hiccup, but Toothless comes and saves him. As a result Toothless is captured and Stoick is furious with Hiccup.

Refusal of the Return

When Hiccup tries to explain himself to Stoick, he makes a slip about a flight he, Astrid, and Toothless took to the Nest of the dragons. It is what Stoick has been looking for, to defeat the dragons. Hiccup tries to tell his dad that the Queen of the Nest, a gigantic dragon that eats her "Workers" if they don't bring her enough food, could never be defeated but Stoick doesn't listen. Hiccup's dad uses Toothless to find the Nest.

After Stoick leaves with Toothless and his men to destroy the Nest, Hiccup goes to save them with Astrid and the other kids in his class. They all go there riding the dragons Hiccup helped them train.

The Magic Flight

Stoick and the other Vikings make it to the Nest, but they wake up the Queen. The Queen attacks the Vikings and tries to kill them all. Hiccup and his friends arrive at the nest and fight the Queen. Hiccup frees Toothless and together they defeat her.

Rescue from Without

When Hiccup and Toothless defeat the Queen she explodes and Hiccup falls into the fire. Toothless dives in to the flames to save his life, but Hiccup still looses a leg.
