Question from Flurina

Hi Anna, great and informative presentation, thank you. You talk about education of the patient about their physical well-being; do you know what that may include? Is that general education what the patients needs in terms of nutrition for the body tissues to stay healthy? I find that an interesting question to reflect upon, as I would imagine, it might well be that we once encounter a patient who actually poses such a question upon us. Thank you for your information :-)

Hello Flurina, thank very much for both your question and feedback. In my opinion that may include as well the risk factors of someone with anorexia and bulimia. Explaining patients about what may happen with their health if they not going to get help that they need. As both conditions may cause life - threatening complications such as heart failure in case of anorexia for example. It is very important for people to understand the seriousness of their condition.

Question from David

Thank you for your presentation Anna is very helpful and informative.
You menshioned that anorexia is most commonly seen in teenagers and the numbers of children with anorexia is rising. In what way would you include the parents or care givers in the treatment approach?
Do they have an important rule in the development of anorexia?
Do they also influence the success of the treatment?

Thank you very much for your question, David. Yes, Anorexia is very commonly seen in teenagers and parents/careers should definitely be included in the treatment approach. As osteopathic practitioner we not allowed to treat anyone below 16 without parent/career consent, which means in case of seeing a teenager with anorexia, we need to explain everything to parent/ career. Parents/careers may have a role in development of anorexia in a teenager, but it is important to be very careful when you talk about that to them. It is very sensitive subject for everyone involved and patients with anorexia in general benefit a lot from having their family involved in therapy/treatment.
