Walter Lee is an african american man in his mid thirties. He's married to Ruth Younger, an he has a son Travis. Walter Lee is a man who struggles with his manhood on a daily basis. This is mostly because of his poverty and because he dreams so big. He is a driver by day, but he has dreams to start a business that will make him and his family rich. This doesn't go to plan, and we see Walter go to a bad place where his manhood is tested.

Walter Lee Younger is a very eccentric man. We see him be dramatic, funny, loud in the high parts of the book. We see this especially with his son Travis. Walter to Travis: “Just tell me where you want to go to school and you’ll go. Just tell me, what it is you want to be—and you’ll be it…Whatever you want to be—Yessir! You just name it, son… and I hand you the world!” p. 108 This is Walter being very eccentric with his son. This shows that Walter is eccentric because he's being loud and fun with his son to prove a point to his wife instead of just talking to her.

I in no way sympathise with walter. I see walter as a character who needs to fail in order to succeed. That's why i do not sympathise with him. I'm also under the firm belief that if you mess up, you have to work your own way out, and if you don't you'll never learn how to succeed. Walter messed up bad, and he'll bounce back from it. Hopefully he learns something and makes some money for real this time. His main weakness is how easily manipulated he is. We see this with the money. His strength in my eyes is how resilient is. The best example of this is after he loses all of his money, he still bounces back, and ends the book on an okay note, as a man.

I chose this art to represent Walter because this is how walter's life has been going. He tells us several times throughout the book that his dreams were kind of put on hold to make money for his family. There is a great example of this as well in the end of the book, where walter loses all of his money, his dreams are yet again cancelled. This is unfortunately how Walter's life is going, and why he works so hard is to try and make Travis's life good, so he can follow his dreams unlike his father.

Poem

DREAMS
by Langston Hughes
Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.

Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.
This poem relates to walter pretty well in the book. We see him go through some hard times mentally because his dream was stolen from him. When he lost the money for awhile he just sat, alone. At this point in the book we see how the poem really related to Walter. He was like a bird with a broken wing. He was so full of life before his dreams were stolen, but his life really did turn into a frozen field in which he could see no end.

This song pertains to Walter Lee because his life is a constant climb. He is constantly trying to climb out of poverty. His life is very hard, and he is being kept down by his poverty. He was knocked down very hard when he had his money stolen. He seems like he'll make the climb though. We see in line 3 and 4 that Miley can almost see her goal. This is kind of how Walter's life is, he keeps getting close to the goal, but it's still so far away from him.

Theme

I believe that the theme of this book is how money can run a someone's life. We see this theme throughout the book.we see this especially with Walter. Mamma tries to talk to walter and make him realize this. Mama: “Son, how come you talk so much ‘bout money?” Walter: “Because, it is life, Mama!” Mama: “Oh—so now its life. Money is life. Once upon a time freedom use to be life—now its money. I guess the world really do change…” Walter: “No—it was always money, Mama. We just didn’t know about it.” p. 74 This shows that the theme of the book is that money can run your life because Walter says this, and he shows it. He shows it by making all of his decisions based off money. That is with the business, and his job, even how he raises his son.

I believe that fences has the same theme as a raisin in the sun. We see Troy talk about money all the time. Money runs Walters life, an Money runs Troy's life. we see this when Troy talking to Bono, Or his sons. He always brings the theme back to money, and how much he works for his money, and how much money he doesn't have, and how much money he gives to other people. Troy makes this theme known, and he worries about money until the day he dies. Hopefully Walter can break this pattern.

Fences is a tale about a man who is trying to overcome his ghosts, and make a good life for his son, and ends up messing up a lot. A raisin in the sun is about a person trying to come into his manhood for real, and make life great for his family. He messes up bad, just like Troy. We see from this that the two plays are very similar. just off of the main characters. We also see through the Protagonist's wives that the plays are even more similar.
We see that Ruth is very much in love with walter, and is hurt by the fact that he drinks, and messes up. She also offers him support when he needs it, jus like Rose. Rose is the same way with Troy that Ruth is with Walter. She is very Supportive, and loves Troy, alot probably more than he deserves. However she supported him until the day he died. From just these two characters, and the theme we can see that Fences, and a Raisin in the Sun are very similar plays.
