For this assignment The Mississauga Valley Community Centre and Library. It is located at 1275 Mississauga Valley Blvd, Mississauga, ON L5A 3R8 and the park’s is named Mississauga Valley Park.
The Mississauga Community Centre and Library offer various programs to help people within the community stay active. Some of the programs include Aquatics classes, Fitness classes, Court sports such as Table tennis, badminton, squash, basketball, volleyball and pickleball, skating and museum tour. This is the City’s largest community center, including the fully equipped Terry Fox Fitness Centre and the Terry Fox Pool and Therapy Pool. Other amenities include the ice arena, meeting rooms and a gymnasium. This community center also has a park which is the center of multiple outdoor activities during the summer. This park includes a great variety of trails that connect to other parks around Mississauga, and it also has a beautiful view of the lake, which is a fantastic place to meditate and take some time off the computer. -Mariana

-Strengths

Mississauga Valley Community Centre and Library have an accessible entrance that includes ramps to facilitate entrances for individuals on a wheelchair, using crutches, walkers, canes and even mothers with strollers. There is a parking lot in front of the main building and a different one in front of the park next to the entrance of the children’s playground.

-The Mississauga Valley Park is a beautiful green space with different entrances from different sides of the area where I live. As I mentioned, the main entrance has accessible ramps; well distribute parking lots and big spaces that facilitate people's traffic coming in and out of the park.

Barriers

-The main building has the appropriate access point for disabled people. The most significant barrier of Mississauga Valley Park is one of the main entrances of the park which can also be use as a short cut to get to the main building, located near by my house and the closest to an elderly home where most of the resident like to take a morning walk.
-The entrance ramp is high incline which is a hazard for individuals with disabilities. The ramp's angle is not the only inconvenience of this entrance; since this ramp is not cemented when it rains, the next day, the ramp is full of mud, and the shoes get stuck on the ground. This makes it impossible for a person on a wheelchair or using a mobility aid to use this entrance since if they are alone, they would have to find a way of climbing the entrance without getting hurt. During winter, when it snows, the ramps freeze, and it looks like an ice-skating rink raising the percentage of falling for any individual with a disability who would like to go in and enjoy the beautiful nature of this park. The second entrance from the other side of it is cemented, but again the high incline represents a risk for disabled individuals. It is hard for me to climb these entrances; I cannot imagine how it would be for a person without help getting down and up this ramp.

-By not being able to use this entrance, individuals with disabilities would have an increase of energy expended on having to walk around for 15 – 20 minutes to try to find the main building and a safe way to come in and walk around the park, which in the end would not be joyful. Since going back home would represent more energy and time spent.

-As I mention in my previous point, the ramp on the opposite side are a hazard for individuals on a wheelchair, using crutches and canes even moms with children or mothers with strollers. People with disability have a hard time and from my perspective they should not use any of these ramps, they represent a risk, and the community should’ve taken into consideration this ramp since they are also an access point to the park and the community center.

-For people who do not have any type of disability is easier to come down the ramp and enjoy the nature of the park, however I have noticed when people are coming down, they must slow down and be careful to avoid falling. which excludes and takes the opportunity out for individuals with disabilities and elderly individuals.

-From my point of view this is unfair, even though the city thought about ramps and accessible entrances form the side where the community center is, they forgot take into consideration residents living at the opposite side of Mississauga Valley community center, specially the elderly community located in the center of the city with square one as main center of attraction instead of promoting green spaces and outdoor activities which can only be done during a short period of time before the snow takes over.

-Mariana

-In order to make this entrance more accessible for individuals with disabilities, I would include a ramp that can be made to bend in with exiting paths and surrounding areas. The ramp should have an appropriate angle of inclination.
-Providing a proper angle of inclination instead of the height that the ramps currently have would enable people with mobility aids and elderly adults to enjoy complete freedom, as they would allow users to go in and out of the park safely. These ramps can minimize the risk of falling.
-I would also include a handrail to provide additional support. With the handrail, this would help balance on steps. When a person loses balance on the ramp or suffers from muscle weakness, they can cling to the railing.
-Railings provide stability, which is especially important for disable individuals, young children, the elderly, pregnant women and people with disabilities. It would also help to prevent falls, provide comfort. If a person has a low balance, a railing can make them feel more comfortable.
-Finally, to increase safety during Inclement Weather, including rain, snow, ice, and sleet, flooring surfaces can become slippery and dangerous during inclement weather. Railings provide support for people with or without a disability to ensure that they will not slip.
-As an addition to the cement ramp, and handrail, caution signs can be included to advise people to be careful and prevent them from falling. One of the main advantages of using an organized safety symbol system is that it is universal and recognized across languages and experience levels. Using images and symbols warns people of dangers. The basic use of safety symbols is to prevent people from getting hurt.
-By making this entrance safer and more accessible, individuals with disabilities would have less energy expend and have more time to enjoy nature.
Resources
“Accessibility Design Manual : 2-Architechture : 5-Railings/Handrails.” United Nations, United Nations, www.un.org/esa/socdev/enable/designm/AD2-05.htm.
Benefits Of Safety Signage.

The location I have chosen that is not accessible for everybody is this section at heart lake conservation area. There are many things to do at this conservation area, including family walks, dog walks, zip-lining, water parks, etc. At the top of this stair case is a parking lot, which leads to a beautiful lake at the bottom that is surrounded by a paved walkway. Many people choose this route, as this is a great place to go for a daily walk/run. Those who are unable to walk will face accessibility dilemmas.
- Estrella

Strength:
Although the route to actually getting down to this lake is unfriendly, once you get to the bottom it is very easily usable. There is a wide paved path that is very accommodation friendly and it is a beautiful scene. This paved road is not only wide, but it is very smooth and clear as well.

Barriers:
Every day, my mom and I take my dogs to the conservation area and usually walk down these flight of stairs (they are closed right now due to the weather). After spending a lot of time learning about accessibility accommodations, I have realized that this stair case makes this route inaccessible for many people. Individuals who require wheelchairs, people who are elderly, have neurological gait abnormalities, balance issues, joint pain conditions, etc may find it difficult to climb or walk down so many stairs. Because this section is more accessible for abled-bodies who have the endurance and are capable to walk up/down this slope of stairs, they have access to the bottom and are able to enjoy a nice walk by the lake. Those who are incapable of ambulating these stairs will find it unfair because they would not be able to take this route and have the same access as other.
- Estrella

To make the lake at the bottom of this staircase accessible to all, I would suggest adding in a gradual paved/metal slope alongside this flight of stairs. In doing this, not only will individuals who require wheelchairs have access to the bottom, but others who may not have the endurance and cognitive capabilities to ambulate a set of stairs will have access as well. If a ramp is placed, rails on either side must also be installed. These rails will give individuals who are using a wheelchair, somewhere to grab and assist them when ascending/descending. These rails will also be useful for other individuals, as it will act as support. I would also suggest cutting down the trees in this area and cleaning up the environmental mess to cause less of a danger for those who face ambulation dilemmas.

Below an example of a ramp with hand rails placed on either side. This will be a perfect idea to place in the conservation area for those who are unable to use a steep slope of stairs.

Disabled people need more ramps, not more fancy new gadgets.

The first location that comes to my mind for this assignment is the Red Hill Valley Recreational Trail located in Hamilton Ontario with many different entrance points. This trail is a very beautiful walk and is about 8.6 miles. A lot of people at home use these trails for running, walking, dog walking, sight seeing, and hiking but there are not many walks people with disabilities are able to enjoy. Sadly, I was unable to go home to get pictures.
- Sky

Strengths

When it comes to the Red Hill trail there are many paved walk ways that couples can enjoy walking their dogs and looking at the baseball filed. Another strength is all the entry points from different locations this provides multiple different types of access from different heights to angles so if others can’t get in one way there’s another way they can try.

Barriers

There are a lot of barriers for this trail. My father takes my siblings and I on our regular trail walk and it's even a popular place my friends and I go to when we hang out. What I’ve noticed from walking the trails so much is if you actually want to go anywhere and see the nice flowing water and scenes it’s very hard. There are a lot of steep hills and dirt paths that are with no way for those who uses mobility aids or muscle disabilities to go up or down to truly enjoy the walk. Most of the paths are also narrow the further you go into the trail. Although their different access points is a strength it is also a weakness when most of these entrance points are dirt hills or just stairs. In this photo this is just one of the many dirt hills my friends and I carefully have to climb down just to get on the trail.
- Sky

When it comes to trails it can be difficult to make changes especially when people don’t want to change anything about the nature around the location but it is not impossible. Some of the changes I would make are adding stairs to the sides of the smaller hills, adding ropes on wooden pikes for those to hold onto although these are not the most stable it is a step in the right direction if stairs are not an option. For most of the entrance ways I would include ramps for those with walkers or wheelchairs and handrails in general to avoid injuries due to falls. I would also add benches or resting areas along the trail. The steep hills I don’t see a possible way for those to be changed for individuals with walkers or wheelchairs without reconstruction around the area but with these added stairs and ramps to other pathways around the water will allow those with disabilities will be able to enjoy more of the trail.
- Sky

On the top floor of the gym (3rd floor of the building) you will find the group class exercise rooms, cycling room, free weights, and all the other weight machines.

This particular location I find not really accessible to many people with disabilities. Yes there are elevators but I find that is really where the accessibility stops. The rest of the gym is built more for people without any disabilities, not for a person who has either a physical, visual, hearing or mental disability. Here are some strengths and barriers I feel that this gym has:
Strengths - There are stairs and elevators that go from the main floor up to the 2nd floor where the main desk, changing rooms, and cardio equipment are located. If you want to use the group exercise room, cycle room, or weights (free or machine), you need to go to the 3rd level by using another set of stairs or go back to the elevators. The changing rooms do not have any doors to open to go inside so there is easy access to them.

Barriers –Here is a list of some that I can identify:

· Front desk and gym access – the front desk that you have to scan your card is pretty high and would not be accessible for someone who might be in a wheel chair. Most of the times there is a staff member there, but if you access the gym during later hours, the desk is not staffed. Also, you need to scan your card in order to unlock the swing gate and these gates are pretty narrow. Not sure if someone in a wheelchair would be able to push through the gate.

· Equipment – I have attached a picture of the cardio equipment and of the weight area. Its hard to appreciate through the pictures, but you can see that the equipment is pretty close together. If some one had a mobility aid like a walker or even forearm crutches and wanted to use the bikes or treadmills, it would be difficult for them to navigate. Also, if there is someone who suffers from anxiety when someone is too close, you can see that it would be very uncomfortable for them to be on these machines seeing how close they are to one another. Also, they do not have weight machines that would be accessible for someone who is in a wheelchair. The client would have to constantly transfer from chair to machine instead of being able to wheel up and into the machine to use.

· Changing rooms – the changing rooms are pretty large in space, but I find that the benches that they put in the middle take up a lot of space. If some with a walker or wheelchair would not be able to pass through to get to the back of the locker rooms where a lot of the private changing rooms are. Also, when there are people on either side of the bench, it is impossible for anyone with or without a disability to access the back of the locker room.

A few things I would recommend:

· Having different levels of the desk, so if someone in a wheelchair comes in, they can easily access the scanner or even feel comfortable speaking to the staff.

· Space out some of the equipment or have a specific area that is dedicated to clients who have mobility aids or have anxiety with personal space.

· Have machines that are wheelchair accessible for clients who are working on their upper body strength.

· Moving some benches out of the way to make an open can clear path to the private changing rooms.

· Goodlife should find or build locations that are on main floors or have only one floor to the gym. Having the multiple floors on the gym make it harder for people to move around and access the equipment. Usually, the stairs are by the front of the gym but the elevators tend to be tucked away to the side or back of the gym. So, moving to one level gyms would be easier access for everyone.

· It would be good if all the trainers in the gym would be educated in training people with disabilities. I’m not sure what there training includes when they start working for Goodlife but it would be a good idea for the company if they don’t have this type of training program.

Resources Used for Post:
Molina, F.

The ideas to make this gym more accessible for individuals with disabilities are incredible. Most of the gym's do not take into considerations individuals on a wheelchair who also need to take of their well being by maintain a good physical health. Modification like make space for equipment or specific areas build for individuals with mobility aids makes the different as well as moving the benches out of the way to clear some space, this would not only benefit individuals with mobility aid but also the rest of the community, by providing more space to walk around and enjoy their time at the gym. From my perspective more gyms should take as an example the YMCA gym with universal design.
-Mariana

It is important to take into consideration people with disabilities, I agree with the fact that modifying nature can be complicated but as it was mention on the post it is not impossible. Adding ramps with handrails would not completely change the nature environment of the park, it would make it more accessible and it would not only provide safety for people with mobility aids but also for pregnant women, individuals with musculoskeletal disorders in the lower limb and even a man or a woman who has being walking for a while and needs to have support to keep going and not fall.

I have also witnessed a very tightly packed GoodLife that is not very accessible for disabled people. I think that is a really good idea to not only clear up the cluttered sections, but to also include machines that are friendly for those who are not capable of utilizing an average machine. I also think it would be a great idea if the GoodLife gym that you have included pictures of, were to set aside a full room on the main floor strictly for disabled people.
- Estrella

I know hand rails would not be able to help those in wheelchairs, but I definitely know that the elderly or even those with just low balance would definitely make use of this. As for individuals who utilize wheelchairs and are simply just not able to walk, I think they should have taken these individuals into consideration when constructing this path. Maybe in the future they will be able to create a more gradual and functional path for those with disabilities.
- Estrella

I chose The Riverwood Conservancy (TRC),which is a public park in Mississauga for this assignment. The Riverwood Conservancy (People also call it Mississauga garden) is located at 4300 Riverwood Park Ln, Mississauga, ON L5C 2S7. It is really a nice place. TRC is one of the most beautiful parks in downtown Mississauga. The Riverwood Conservancy is “a volunteer and member-based charity” that has a variety of programs, activities, gardening, conservation, river, educational programs, lots of beautiful birds spotting, art gallery, and nice trails. Residence use the trails for walking, running, and biking. Disable people who can walk, will enjoy the whole park, but those who cannot walk and they need to use their wheelchair, unfortunately, they cannot enjoy all trails and hiking paths for some accessibility reasons.
-Somayeh

Strength:

It has a few large parking spots, including designate spots for disabled people. The small budling (programs and activities) which is inside the park, has accessible automatic doors which are suitable to be use by disabled people. From the main access point, there is botanical garden, which has lots of beautiful plants and flowers. This section is very easy to access for people with all kinds of physical abilities as well as those who need aid mobilities such as walkers, wheelchairs, or canes. The garden is actually designed for cognitive and physically disabled individuals (children, adult, senior, etc.) to build their confidence, strength, and overcome difficulties, so that everyone can experience the joy of nature. It is open every day to everyone. Also, you can find that some of the trails and path ways are nicely paved and multiple use, which makes it easy for people to walk or bike.
Barriers:

In many parks, I believe trails are the most challenging ones to make accessible because usually there is an emphasize in keeping the design natural and not to make a change. In this case, I think it is possible to both keep natural elements all the while creating accessible trails for people with disability so that they too can enjoy the trail. This is how it can be fair for them as well. For example, in this location (picture below); the trail leading to the river, starts with a very steep hill with lots of small rocks. It takes only a minute, for a healthy person; to walk down the path to reach to the rest of the trail along the river. It is easy for young people to come down the hill, but for the elderly and people with disability it is not only near to impossible but also dangerous to try to walk down. While the rest of the trail is accessible this barrier at the start of the trail; makes it all in accessible for disable people, and sadly they cannot enjoy the beautiful river which is unfair.
-Somayeh

For this situation (high hill) I would recommend to build a zig-zag ramp beside the side walk for those who are in wheelchair and those who cannot walk down/up the steep hill. When I went through the TRC website, I realized that there is not enough information for disabled people to help them plan their visit. So, I would also recommend that the TRC website to be updated to provide information about the trails and pathways for people with different types of disabilities. Having information about the area can help disabled people at least to make their own decision whether they want to go there or not instead of going there, feel frustrated, and realize that they cannot go on the trail.
Resources:

Patrons & Directors. I would add more bright lighting to the park area and pave the uneven walkway to reduce tripping hazards. Adding a few park benches would provide a resting spot for kids, parents or caregivers who need a break from walking. A cover/shelter area for protection from the sun would be useful to individuals who are sensitive to sunlight. In this way, those who require wheelchairs are not restricted to a narrow path, as well as those with poor balance will be able to have the support of hand rails. I can only imagine how tiring this walkway would become for many people. I agree that these people will make use of benches that are placed on this walkway, giving them a chance to rest. I would suggest for the city to either construct a separate route or modify this route. They can make it more accessible for the disabled people that will not require so much energy and time. One way they can modify this route can be by levelling out the land more, so it is not so much of a hike.
- Estrella

Hi Natalie!

I am glad that you chose gym because going to the gym and activities for the disabled people are considered as an important tool for physical well-being, creating a sense of self-confidence and active participation in social life. Exercise will reduce the pain and problems caused by a person's disability; It even increases a person's independence. A person with physical disabilities can do a wider range of tasks alone and without the help of others. Many gyms have those barriers which you have mentioned like high desks, changing rooms does not have enough space, uncomfortable access to the equipment, etc. I believe your recommendation is pretty reasonable and I think it won't be very difficult to make those changes.

Well done!
-Somayeh

I chose this because it is such a large space that everyone goes to, whether it is to buy new clothes or to go to the gym. The gym is located on the bottom floor, and there are 2 upper levels to shop. There is also a parking garage located on the opposite side of the mall and an underground parking close to the front entrance. There is only 1 elevator that goes to all 3 floors and none that goes to the floor with the gym, only escalators. -Britney Harrison

Strength: The mall is so large and has many ground level entrances, that are very accessible with lots of parking. There are also automatic doors for access in and out of the mall. The mall has very large open space, that is easy to move through and anyone with possible gait aids, scooters, wheelchairs, etc. can move around without any limitation.

Barrier: A barrier that this mall faces is lack of elevators around the mall. The elevator shown in the photo is located at the main entrance and it is the only entrance that has one. There is another one in the middle of the mall for access to the food court. This is a barrier for people who may have challenges with their mobility and need access to different areas in the mall. People will need to walk around the entire floor to get to where they need to be and change levels at one spot. There is also no gym access using an elevator just an escalator. They aren’t providing full accessibility for everyone who may want to go here.
-Britney Harrison

Located in west end Toronto, and nearby many shopping amenities, I chose this location because it was a park I grew up playing in. It also previously was not as accessible or environmentally appropriate as it is today, so it has come a long way. Located in a bit of a depression geographically, the park has a few access points. One of the access points involves a steeper hill; the other two access point involves a flatter incline. Equipped with a playground jungle gym, swing set, and lots of green space, this park is often bustling in the summertime, whether from local residents or for those who have just finished shopping nearby. Public transportation is also seconds away, just across the street in both directions.

Strengths: Since the park is located quite centrally, the fact that public transportation is directly across street with a frequent bus route facilitates getting to the park. This is a strength for those who are unable to drive or cannot walk for long distances.

Previously, the park did not have ample seating as it does now. It used to be equipped with two benches. With a park as busy as this one, it used to be difficult to find a spot to sit and rest. Now, the park is equipped with many benches, as well as picnic tables. This is good for those looking to rest maybe after a walk and looking to conserve some energy.

Another relatively recent addition to the park is the installation of street lamps. Once night fell, the park used to be very dark at night, with only the streetlight from the main roads to illuminate the park. Now with the added lamps, the park is well illuminated and people can enjoy a stroll in the evening or perhaps children can continue playing a bit later before they are called home.

Barriers: The park's one shortcut through the park involves a steep hill. Daredevil children love to ride down this hill on their bikes and other wheeled toys. However, this is obviously not appropriate for those with reduced mobility/stability and using mobility aids. Although the park is still accessible with other entrances with a flatter incline, individuals with reduced mobility or endurance would have to walk around the perimeter of the park to access it safely. Again, while there is still an accessible access point, it may not be good for those with lowered endurance and are unable to take the extra time to walk around.

Another barrier the park has is the playground surface. Wood chips are found in the playground floor, in lieu of sand, and this can cause a very uneven surface. Having this surface of wood chips means things like children putting pieces in their mouths, it can easily obscure foreign and potentially dangerous objects, and it cannot be traversed by those who use mobility aids due to its uneven and unstable surface.

One final barrier is the park does not possess any equipment for individuals with disabilities. A child who uses a wheelchair, for example, may not be able to participate in playing and climbing with others. This, of course, can make anybody feel excluded.

Building upon the barriers this park presents, I would recommended the following changes:

Steep Hill
For the park's one steep hill, I would recommend an architectural layout change. Though it would be an expensive task, the layout of the park could potentially be changed to involve a ramp that's built in accordance to AODA standards.

Change Wood Chip Play Surface to Rubber Tile Surface
For the park's current playground surface of wood chips, I would recommend that this would be changed to a tiled surface. A tiled surface is often made from recycled rubber and provides a surface that is stable, and therefore accessible, for those with mobility aids. It is also much safer in terms of fall impact. Not only is this good for children who may fall while playing, this would also be a much better surface to fall on if a person using a mobility aid happened to fall on it. However, one drawback to this is that it is relatively expensive. See picture below for how this looks.

Playground Set
Since the park does not have any accessible equipment for individuals who use some sort of wheelchair, a recommendation I would make is installing an accessible swing for wheelchairs. See picture below for how this looks.

References
Children's Environmental Health Network (n.d.). FAQs: Playground surfaces. https://cehn.org/our-work/eco-healthy-child-care/ehcc-faqs/playground-surfaces/

Rubber tile image credit: https://www.diamond-safety.com/rubber-playground-surfacing/

Wheelchair swing image credit: https://www.rollingwithoutlimits.com/view-post/Wheelchair-Accessible-Swings-Now-a-Reality

I was using the GoodLife gym at this location of Bramalea City Centre when I broke my ankle, and I remember how difficult it was to use the escalator with little to no mobility. Not only did the gym make it difficult access, but it was hard to enter different levels of the mall as well. The escalators may also cause fear of actually stepping onto the stairs for some. I also agree that the elevators are far and it takes long to actually reach them from different points of the mall. These entry options cause restriction of access for people who are unable to walk, the blind, etc. I think it is a good idea to add more elevators throughout the mall. I would also highly recommend adding an elevator to the gym, in this way everybody will have access.
- Estrella

Uneven surfaces can cause falls that might result in bad injuries that might worsen the physical wellness of individuals who need mobility aids to move around. Implementing a wood chip surface would provide more balance, and it would reduce the risk form falling; not only this but the fact that recycled rubber can be used to build it also adds an environmental factor. Since new movements are emerging to protect our environment, reusing recycling rubbers can help as a promotion for the implementation of it in the park and even motivate foundations to invest and help with the cost of the wood chip surface.
-Mariana

Hi Somayeh, great analysis! I agree with you that a steep and rocky path would be difficult for individuals with disabilities to navigate also considering that trail paths tend to be quite narrow. A wider path would make it easier and a lot safer for people passing by each other in opposite directions (especially if someone is using a gait aid, everyone has more room to keep moving). I very much enjoyed your recommendation to provide information about trails and pathways specifically for people with varying disabilities on the website.
-Alia

Hi Natalie, very thorough analysis! I'm not sure why gyms are still using the spiral/swing gate for access to the gym when they can adopt something similar to the picture shown below. Perhaps it is because they are more worried about making sure only paying clients gain entry instead of focusing on accessibility first. With an entrance like the one shown below, no one would be able to enter without scanning their membership card first and individuals with disabilities, especially those using a gait aid, have easier access into the facility.
- Alia

The location I chose for this assignment is the Limehouse Conservation Area which is located in Halton Hills. It is a beautiful conservation park that I visited for the first-time last year with my family. Although it can be tricky to find, it offers free parking along with a variety of beautiful trails that are filled with a lot of things to see such as caves, escarpment rocks, old buildings, a river with a bridge etc. It’s packed with history! However, due to covid, I was unable to visit in person so here is a picture I found online. I recommend visiting if you enjoy hiking and spending time outdoors.
- Santhie

Hi Sky, I agree with you that it can be tough to make changes to the surrounding physical landscape and I like your idea about adding small steps/ropes for greater stability when possible. I also think it could be good to improve signage so that individuals with disabilities can make informed decisions related to which trail they want to explore and from which entrance point. The posted trail sign (similar to the picture you posted) should provide audio and visual information about different trails in the area including details about the surface, i.e., steepness, slippery, rocky etc. It would also provide information about obstructions to expect, for example a fallen tree.
-Alia

Resource:
Nagakyrie, S.

Accessibility Strengths:
This location is accessible in that the entrance is connected to the main parking lot which makes it easy for everyone to find. At the entrance, you will find detailed maps and descriptions to help visitors navigate their way through the trails E.g., trail markers Although there is only one entrance point, there are several short hiking trails that loop around and take you right back to the entrance. This is great for those who do not want to hike the whole trail. In addition, a large portion of the path is very wide and can accommodate individuals who might want to use a stroller or use a wheelchair for example.

Accessibility Barriers:

Deep within the trail are many steep hills and crevices that can be difficult to pass through for individuals who have disabilities as well as reduced strength and mobility. Although gait aids can be helpful, there is no consistent flat concrete surface to provide support throughout the trails. There are also stairs that must be taken in order to access certain parts of the trail. There are individuals who will be unable to reach these parts of the trail because it can be dangerous. Individuals may be unable to use stairs due to a disability, age or pain in addition to those who use strollers, wheelchairs etc. Another barrier is the lack of visibility at night. There were no light posts within the trail. This can pose a problem for everyone since they will have difficulty seeing the pathway, especially at night or in weather conditions such as fog.
- Santhie

Also, the fact that the entrance-ramp incline is so steep that even able-bodied people have difficulty and have to use caution on it puts things into perspective. If a person without a disability has a difficult time ascending/descending the ramp, how can we expect persons with disabilities to do it with additional challenges? I agree with your recommendations to install a ramp with an appropriate incline.

Hi Natalie,

Great job on your thoroughness of your gym! I think it's interesting that the gates are not the most accessible by having the card reader high. I'm not sure if you've seen this recently, but the new Presto gates in the TTC stations have one gate that is accessible-friendly. Even on these gates, the reader for the Presto card is in two locations: one at a higher height and another one is lower so it can be easily reached by persons using a wheelchair. Something as simple as adding a lower card reader can go a long way. It's also unfortunate that much of the gym equipment is designed for able-bodied people. I like your recommendation of having trainers who are competent to teach classes who people with disabilities and having a work area with accessible equipment. Perhaps they can add a machine like the one pictured below. The person does not have to transfer, and can position themselves easily to work out (edit: I just noticed the picture you posted at the end of your recommendations. We have the same recommendation for equipment!)
- Aaron
