Elissa Alcocer
Period: US Gov OC1
Current Events
7 June, 2018
House GOP makes final push to avoid civil war on immigration
On June 7th, 2018, moderates and republicans are trying to stop a major fight on an important topic regarding foreign policy, immigration. Republicans sent out a petition in order to try and gain 218 votes in the Capitol to send DACA children back to their home nation and to construct a border wall along mexico. Republicans are trying to gain the last three votes that they need in order to accomplish what they need to do. Immigrants would be able to gain citizenship outside of the country. But moderates don't want to send immigrants back to their country. A deal will be happening in a GOP conference meeting on Thursday June 7th to discuss this conflict in congress. Moderates don’t want to send immigrants back to their country in order for them to get citizenship because they see it not necessary especially since the illegal immigrants are able to accomplish this process in America. If moderates and republicans are able to reach a new deal, their old one being that the republicans gain the 218 votes to send immigrants back and to get democrats on their side with building a border wall on Mexico, moderates will be the winner in the situation because they are not budging on not wanting to send immigrants back to their country. In conclusion, republicans and moderates are trying to set a new deal in order to make both parties happy, but if they come to a mutual agreement then both parties might have to hold off on their plans to either build a wall or help DACA children become legal citizens in America.
The people that are being affected by this event are mostly DACA children who have the fear of going back to their original nation after being in America for so long. The event that is taking place is important to me for the fact that I fear that this might cause a heavy flow of immigration police abusing their power and mistreating regular hispanic citizens just like the police beatings on African Americans. I also have some family who are not documented and they have children who are young. I fear that if republicans are able to get the last three votes in order to accomplish what they want to do, it would tear families apart and leave children in foster care. My reaction to the event is mostly fear because people having so much power to have on the public can cause another mass of riots like the police brutality riots a couple years back.

Rachael, et al. “House GOP Makes Final Push to Avoid Civil War on Immigration.” About Us, POLITICO, 7 June 2018, www.politico.com/story/2018/06/07/house-republicans-immigration-daca-630370.

Elissa Alcocer
Period: US Gov OC1
Current Events
11 June, 2018
Trump Signals Support for States Deciding if Pot Is Legal
The article is discussing the conflict that some states and the federal government have on the ban on marijuana. The proposal that the ban be lifted would drastically change how the US legal landscape for pot supporters and their businesses. This proposal gained President Trump’s support on Friday June 8th but this is causing major conflict with Attorney General Jeff Sessions who does not support lifting the ban of marijuana. This new bill would change the federal government's definition of marijuana to exclude industrial hemp, which is similar to marijuana but doesn’t have THC which gives users a high. Even though Trump says he gives his support as we have seen in the past when he was campaigning for president he stated that he would respect states decision to legalize marijuana but also has criticized the legalization of the drug and has wanted it to be stopped.
This article is affecting the persons in the states that have legalized marijuana or any other drug for the matter because even though the states have it legal the federal government is still wanting to try and ban drugs from the common people. I understand the points that the government is trying to push which is addiction and overdose but, why shouldn’t they do the same for alcohol or cigarettes? I mean it is so easy to obtain these things in any corner store all around the nation and yet they want to ask why so many Americans have addiction problems. I think that they are trying to control a marijuana because it is fairly new, even though it has been around for awhile, and because they think that it will be easy to stop Americans if the problem is contained to a few states. They are trying to put out a fire that they think is only to one neighborhood. I think that this is ridiculous and that the government should be focusing on more important things in the world like the summit and the possibility of leaving the summit on the brink of war.

“Trump Signals Support for States Deciding If Pot Is Legal.” U.S. News & World Report, U.S. News & World Report, 8 June 2018, www.usnews.com/news/politics/articles/2018-06-08/trump-signals-support-for-legislation-easing-us-ban-on-pot.

Elissa Alcocer
Period: US Gov OC1
Current Events
12 June, 2018
Primary Elections 2018: What to Watch For
Today on June 12th five states are going to hold their primary elections: Nevada, Virginia, Maine, South Carolina and North Dakota. The article published by the New York Times summarizes each five states elected governors and what they did in their campaign to try and persuade the people to vote for them. First is Nevada, mostly dominated by Democrats, Christina Giunchigliani and Steve Sisolak in today’s race but they haven’t had a Democratic governor since 1999 and the Democrats have a good chance of winning election this year. But their Republican rival,Attorney General Adam Laxalt also has a good chance of winning election again for Nevada.Next is Virginia, Corey Stewart is one of two Republicans that are running for Virginia and he is known for “having narrowly lost a bitter Republican primary” for last years governor race. But in Virginia their 10th district six Democrats want to challenge Barbara Comstock who has already served two terms because they want to gain control of the house for Virginia. Maine has had a Republican governor for about eight years, Paul R. LePage, but in today election four new Democratic candidates are joining the fight to get LePage out of office. It seems as if LePage might lose this election for the fact that the newcomers are all Democrat and that the state of Maine might be persuaded to swing Democrat if they see it best. Next in South Carolina. South Carolina’s governor is Henry McMaster hasn’t even had a full term because the governor before him left to the Trump administration. The polls show that he should be the favorite vote but it is uncertain if he will break the 50 percent vote to avoid a runoff. For the state there will be tight races in their First and Fourth Districts with some expected to be re-elected but their opponents might override them in the run for Representative.
This article made me feel tired with all of this information on five different states. But it gives a lot of information that before I did not know about because the news only focuses on the local community.

Elissa Alcocer
Period: US Gov OC1
Current Events
13 June, 2018
Ryan Sets Votes on Immigration as Moderates’ Revolt Falls Short
This article is a continuation of my first current event which was about Moderates and Republicans going into debate on immigration and DACA children. The article is the end result of this meeting between the two sides for immigration. On Tuesday night Speaker Paul D. Ryan controlled a “moderate Republican rebellion” by promising to hold another high-stakes vote on this topic next week, which brought up the other issues that Republicans have been facing this season. This is the fact that it has been harder for Republicans to gain the votes they needed to stay on top of Democrats. This decision was a defeat to the “rebellious” immigration Moderates who were two signatures short of the 218 required to force the House to turn their focus on the immigration issue on the border, the DACA children, and tougher immigration force on the border. If the Moderates were to have gained the last two votes the House would had to have also vote on the Dream Act which would have helped DACA children and Dreamers. According to the House rules, Tuesday was the last time for force votes in June and as the night went on Moderates failed to come up with the last two votes ending with a vote for next week. Mr. Ryan was afraid that the debate on immigration would divide the party even more than it already is, but some leaders with mass Hispanic support believe that to put them off is even worse for both parties.
This article is affecting Dreamers and DACA children with the uncertainty of either gaining citizenship or getting sent back to their country and trying to gain citizenship over there. This is important to me because some of my family are undocumented and I know they sometimes fear immigration police. This also affects immigration children because they are worried about their future. I think it would be dumb to send them back to their country and make them get citizenship in their country. They have never been to that country or it has been a while and it would be confusing for them. Who would take care of them? Would they have to live on their own if they didn’t have any other family in that country?

Stolberg, Sheryl Gay, and Thomas Kaplan. “Ryan Sets Votes on Immigration as Moderates' Revolt Falls Short.” The New York Times, The New York Times, 13 June 2018, www.nytimes.com/2018/06/12/us/politics/republicans-immigration-votes.html?rref=collection/timestopic/U.S. Congress&action=click&contentCollection=timestopics®ion=stream&module=stream_unit&version=latest&contentPlacement=2&pgtype=collection.

Elissa Alcocer
Period: US Gov OC1
Current Events
14 June, 2018
White House opposes Senate measure to block Trump's deal to save China's ZTE
The article is about how the Senate and the White House wanted to make a proposal to block the President’s deal to revive Chinese Telecommunications company ZTE. The meeting, which will be happening in Congress, will happen this week and the President’s bill is expected to pass. Some Republicans that support Trump are for it because the China company was blocked from buying U.S. parts and they think that China was a big part/help with the summit that just recently happened. They want to pass the bill for China but the Senate and the White House don’t want this bill to pass because the ban caused the company sell to Iran and North Korea which is out of U.S. sanctions. Under the deal with the Commerce Department, ZTE has agreed to pay a $1 billion fine and change its leadership, among other provisions. The deal gives the U.S. "complete oversight" of ZTE's activity without undue harm to American suppliers and their workers. This is all happening this week in Washington and there is a split on supporting it or not supporting it because there is an uncertainty of who will oversee the company and if the company will betray the trust of America after they get their parts and sell them back to who was buying before.
This article to me is somewhat confusing because the president is so ready to help others out like the ZTE company who by the way misused the U.S. but then when it comes to our allies he is ready to insult them if they do not agree with him and his opinion. The people being affected by this is everyone in the country, the company and its employees, and maybe the people buying from the company during the ban. The country would be affected by this because what if the company sold ”bigger and better” items to Iran and North Korea and they used them against the U.S. and China it could mean destruction for the countries. The company and the employees can be affected by this ban life for the good because the company might have to hire more people and that means better employment rates. But it can also be bad because if they do sell back to Iran and North Korea they could get caught and be forced to shut down the company. The people of China can also be affected by this with better job opportunities but as I said before Iran and North Korea could turn and attack or they could get shut down by the U.S. my reaction to this is somewhat upset because Trump is so ready to jump on foreign affairs when we need help here at home.

Pramuk, Jacob. “White House Opposes Senate Measure to Block Trump's Deal to Save China's ZTE.” CNBC, CNBC, 13 June 2018, www.cnbc.com/2018/06/13/white-house-wants-to-stop-senate-effort-to-block-trumps-zte-deal.html.

Elissa Alcocer
Period: US Gov OC1
Current Events
18 June, 2018
White House Unblocks Twitter Users Who Sued Trump, but Appeals Ruling
The White House unblocked seven Twitter accounts who sued the president for barring them from seeing or responding to his tweets. The event that happened is the Trump administration decided to unblock the accounts from being able to interact with the president’s account without say-so from the judge’s ruling. She left that decision for the White House. Late Monday June 4th the Justice Department informed the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University, which is representing the plaintiffs, that it had unblocked their accounts. This case has been happening for about a month before this date. This event happened because the plaintiffs sued President Trump because they claimed that since he blocked them on his Twitter account. The plaintiffs argued that Mr. Trump’s account amounted to a public forum — a “digital town hall” — which makes whatever he does a public matter for everyone to debate about. So when he blocked them they claimed that it violated their rights and the judge agreed with them and let them be in favor of the case. The plaintiffs are reacting with happiness for the fact that they won the case and got unblocked from the account.
This article to me was an insight to how the president is so childish. It makes me feel sad and scared on how he can and is running the country. What if he did something similar to this with a threat? Or, what if he said something to a leader and that could have great effect for America depending on who we got got upset. The people that are being affected by this event are the plaintiffs because they felt as if their freedom of speech was being violated by the president. Personally if I were to be blocked by the president I wouldn’t care because that proves to me that he can’t handle criticism from anyone and chooses to be a child and block someone for being mean and not supporting them.
Savage, Charlie. “White House Unblocks Twitter Users Who Sued Trump, but Appeals Ruling.” The New York Times, The New York Times, 5 June 2018, www.nytimes.com/2018/06/05/us/politics/trump-twitter-account-lawsuit.html? rref=collection/timestopic/Executive Power&action=click&contentCollection=timestopics®ion=stream&module=stream_unit&version=latest&contentPlacement=2&pgtype=collection

Elissa Alcocer
Period: US Gov OC1
Current Events
19 June, 2018
Trump losing GOP and media allies in outcry over separating immigrant families.
The event that is taking place in the article is the situation at the Mexican border where they are separating families at detention centers and the article is pointing out why the families shouldn’t be being separated. President Trump and others that have been coming out and giving statements about what is happening at the border and why it is happening backing the policy which is separating the families. The event has been going on for about a month but recently got major publicity because of pictures and videos of the families being separated. This is happening at the U.S and Mexico border and detention centers around the border. The cause of the event taking place at the border is because the Trump administration is enforcing the zero tolerance policy and because immigrants are coming in illegally. People are reacting to the policy, the videos and pictures negatively saying that it is inhumane separating the families and that the government doesn’t have the right to be separating the families.
This article gave me a little more insight into how/what is going on at the border. I have been following this story since the first day of school. I understand why everyone claims that it is inhumane but since the Trump administration was able to come up with this policy they are enforcing it. Also, if you think about it these families are going through what any other person being prosecuted for breaking the law in America, not being able to see their family. Also while I see why experts are saying that it is emotionally traumatizing the children I don’t see why people are holding up signs comparing these detention centers to concentration camps. I saw this on Telemundo news and I was in shock because they are completely different situations.
Kurtz, Howard. “Trump Losing GOP and Media Allies in Outcry over Separating Immigrant Families.” Fox News, FOX News Network, 19 June 2018, www.foxnews.com/politics/2018/06/19/trump-losing-gop-and-media-allies-in-outcry-over-separating-immigrant-families.html.

Elissa Alcocer
Period: US Gov OC1
Current Events
20 June, 2018
Trump says he'll cut off foreign aid to countries that send 'not their best' people
The event taking place is a trade war between the U.S and China over tariffs and how much money should be taxed on the imported goods.President Trump is threatening to set another list of tariffs on China and China is not going to have it. Beijing responded to the new about Trump with the support of their ministry claiming to start opposing tariffs on the U.S as a response. President Trump already gave China their first set of tariffs which would impose a 25 percent tariff on up to $50 billion of Chinese products. Tariffs on an initial list of goods worth some $34 billion will kick in on July 6. This is happening in China and the United states affecting everybody in each country because then we would have to raise prices here to deal with the tariffs and China would do the same.People are reacting to this issue with China as if it is serious because they know China is our greatest importer and exporter for American products and if China is ready to put tariffs on the U.S prices will climb in both countries. This is happening because President Trump wants American products to be dominant and he believes that by raising prices he can accomplish that through tariffs.
The people that can be affected by this trade war between the two countries is everyone living in the U.S and in China. If China decides to go through with their plan of using tariffs on the U.S then that would mean that prices would go up for almost everything (in the U.S, I’m not sure about China). This could cause riots about things being priced higher because of Trump’s decision of opposing more tariffs on China. This could also cause business to out of business because no one want to spend a lot of money on something they either get cheaper somewhere else or just not buy it at all because of the price. This is important to me because I don’t to be stuck paying higher for something just because the president wants to give China tariffs. I think that President Trump should not give another list of tariffs to China because he would be shooting America in the foot for economic reasons.
Tan, H. (2018).

Elissa Alcocer
Period: US Gov OC1
Current Events
25 June, 2018
How the Supreme Court just rocked the internet
The event that is happening is that the Supreme Court ruled that the states have the rights to charge sales tax on online transactions by out-of-states companies with no physical presence in their territory. The court made the decision but citizens of America will be affected by this because then this means that we will have to be paying more out of pocket than we already are. The decision happened at the supreme court last Thursday, June 21st and is going to take effect in all 50 states to the out-of-states companies. The states claim that they are losing money because of the tax break provided to the online vendors. But the court made a decision about 26 years ago exempting online vendors as in the case of Quill Corp v. North Dakota which holds that without a federal law holding otherwise, state laws that encourage in-state transactions over cross-state ones should be struck down, because they inhibit free and open interstate commerce. Some people are divided because they see where the ruling is helping vendor sell more American products and not foreign but it brings up questions about the tax and how it would be used.
This article brings to light some of the things that is happening and no one is paying attention to. I understand that some issues seem to be more important but this is nowhere in any type of news outlet other than online. Why is that? Immigration is all that I see on the news. When I was younger i used to think that there was nothing happening because they would show the same things over and over again. But now to me it feels like they overshadow news with other news. This ruling is going to affect people by having small business owners charge especially in states where they don’t charge sales tax like in California.
Yang, J. (2018).

Elissa Alcocer
Period: US Gov OC1
Current Events
26 June, 2018
Trump subtweets Amazon in praising Supreme Court tax ruling
President Trump subtweeted Amazon about the ruling that the Supreme Court gave the states the ability to tax online “out-of-the state” companies and their products. The article explains what the decision means and why President Trump decided to “call out” Amazon on them not being able to get out of not paying taxes anymore. The ruling took place last Thursday and this event happened the same day only a few hours after the court's decision. The ruling is not specified on when this new law will be taken into effect but from the article it seems soon. The ruling will be taken place in all online, and in-store purchases, all over the nation and Amazon seems to be getting hit the hardest with them being on the spot with the president. This ruling happened because the ruling clears the way for a fair and level playing field where all retailers compete under the same sales tax rules whether they sell merchandise online, in-store or both.
This event is going to affect everyone around the nation because this could mean that for shoppers the prices on our goods are going to go up. This proves my point from yesterday about the media being selective about what they put on the news and what they don’t show. Also this can go into deeper context about President Trump on how he can act impulsive and childish. This makes me see Trump as a person who doesn’t do good for the country but himself. He reminds me of Regina George from Mean Girls because he wants to look after himself and he doesn't care who he takes down with him.
OVERLY, S., BECKER, B., GERSTEIN, J. and Shafer, J. (2018).

Elissa Alcocer
Period: US Gov OC1
Current Events
27 June, 2018
Brendan Dassey Of 'Making A Murderer' Won't Have Case Heard By Supreme Court
Brendan Dassey a 16 year old, back in 2005, was found guilty of assisting a murder on confession that his lawyers claim that was constrained. The Supreme Court will not be reconsidering his case because of reasons unknown. They do not have to give a reason and so they have not. Over the past two years, a lower court and a three-judge panel of an appeals court both found that Dassey's confession was involuntary and that he should be released. In December the full appeals court overturned the decision claiming that he should stay and finish his sentence. His lawyers are pointing out the fact that Dassey was a confused 16 year old who was believing that the cops interrogating him had his best interest at heart but in reality , according to his lawyers, they manipulated him to confessing to something he didn’t do. His lawyers are continuing to try and fight for his freedom and for the court to hear his case again.
This article makes me feel like the justice system is corrupt and unjust. If they are going to interrogate a person isn’t there a process as to who has to be in the room when this happens? This might not seem like an important case and I somewhat agree with the court who overturned the ruling because even if he was confused he should not have said anything without his lawyers present or at least his parents. Cases like these always have two sides to every story and I want to know the reason why, other than the confession, he was found guilty. Was there other evidence? I guess I might never know because the court won’t hear the case again.
"NPR Choice Page".

Elissa Alcocer
Period: US Gov OC1
Current Events
28 June, 2018
Trump Says Justice Kennedy Retired Because ‘He Felt Confident In Me’
President Trump is happy because the Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy is retiring after 30 years as a Justice. Trump is rushing to find a replacement because he wants Republicans to have majority vote in the cases. He also wants a justice who will be able to try and overturn important cases such as the Roe v. Wade which made abortion legal. The president is trying to find a new Justice as soon as possible because if they do not then they would have to wait until fall for the midterm elections to make it a fair election for both parties. Trump held a rally in Fargo North Dakota yesterday to “gloat” about the justice being a “great guy” and the justice feeling confident in Trump in order to retire. This is happening because the Supreme Court Justice wants to spend more time with him family after being on the court for 30 years. He was first brought on the court when Reagan was president.
I first heard of this news yesterday when I was at home watching the world news. I was shocked to hear that President Trump would want to try and turn over Roe v. Wade. I knew he was pro-life but can he actually do this and change the legality of abortion? I am pro-choice and feel as if this not right. Why should someone else be able to choose for a woman if she wants to keep her child or not? I feel like people that are pro-choice are going to react to this negatively because he is trying to change something that has been here since 1973. If he changes it people are going to fight to get it back.
"Trump Says Justice Kennedy Retired Because ‘He Felt Confident In Me'".
