Normalizing the "abnormal"

I really appreciate the writing and artistic approach to sharing this powerful data about the diversity of sex and sexuality in slime molds (and for all the species we have learned about). In particular, I am captivated by the way the author normalizes sex and sexual diversity, "the really outlandish thing is to have only two [sexes]" - this framing helped me grapple with information that is contrary to what I was encultured to know. Secondly, I adore this case-study, first person narrative approach as a pedagogical orientation to the work that can bring learners into the story in a way that builds an affective relationships. This narrative approach is also used in Queer Ducks and is very effective. As an early childhood educator, I am thinking about how I can enact this narrative pedagogical approach through illustration, oral story, or puppetry to make the stories and realities of these species inviting, relational, and captivating.

With my teacher hat on...The defintion of sex cells (carries one complete set of your genes) and the intro statement/definition of "sexes" (define who can reproduce with whom) helps put the rest of the reading in perspective and adds clarity.

I appreciate the info re: the "pros and cons" of populations with varying number of sexes and how the number corresponds with the likelihood or ease of finding a mate. Does a maximum number of sexes exist?

Simplifying & Honoring Complexity

I really enjoyed how the biological nature of slime molds was talked about, especially involving the complexity of the genes (upholding the biology), but thoroughly explaining (summarizing) without getting too far into the biology that may lose someone without a slime mold background. It provokes more thoughts about how society has shaped our understanding the diversity of sex & gender, especially within our biology classrooms.
