Throughout their stay during that time, they had managed to amalgamate and mix in with the Malay culture as cross-marriage among the Chinese and the locals were common back then. This was due to the fact that Chinese women were not allowed to leave China legally. The descents of theirs are known as Peranakan which means "born again". or in simpler word "descendants". Most of Peranakans settled around Malacca, Penang and Singapore. During the British colonization, most of the Peranakans strived wealthily due to them being successful merchants.
