My property was seized by the states and all that Congress did was recommend that they give my property back. Congress did not force them to give my home back because they never liked that I was loyal to Britain. Some have to lament over the wreak of their departed wealth and estates and I am one of those people.   • Americans didn't repay prewar debt or return Loyalists property
  • The British didn't return runaway slaves and refused to give up military outposts near the Great Lakes
  • The war left the nation with a debt of about $27 million
  • Thousands of Loyalists lost their properties. Between 60,000 and 100,000 Loyalists left the U.S. and headed to Canada
  • Several thousand African Americans and Native Americans left for Canada aswell
