Grandmother replies saying that she must not be trying hard enough, to which Janie reply's with "Ah wants to want him sometimes (Chapter 3, Page 23). This shows that Janie cannot force love, and she is young and is still learning what she wants and what love really is.

Suddenly, she sees a tall figure in the pollen-gilded air. In a split-second decision, she kisses Johnny Taylor over the fence. Just as she does, Nanny sees the affair, and at once scolds Janie for her choices and newfound maturation by saying that Johnny Taylor was "lacerating her Janie with a kiss." Nanny really wanted Janie's mother to have a loving relationship that she didn't have. However, Janie's mother was raped and fell into alcohol abuse. Janie's mother left Janie in the care of Nanny. Now, Nanny wants to keep Janie safe by arranging a marriage where Janie would be taken care of but not loved.
