Children will reach milestones at their own pace.

Not every child will hit developmental milestones at exactly the same time. Every child is unique and will develop according to their own timing. As long as children are hitting age appropriate developmental milestone within a reasonable amount of time (i.e., three months of the projected time), they are within a normal developmental range.

Current school schedules are contradictory to the optimal development of a child.

The typical American school schedule is based on a time long past and is no longer viable to the demands of modern society and child development. When the American school calendar was first established, it was done in a way that allowed for children to work on the family farm during planting and harvesting seasons, and attend school during the winter months. The majority of American children no longer are expected to work on the family farm and attend school. Speculation has recently led to research into whether adding days to the school calendar will increase student achievement and alleviate some stress on the child and teacher.

Research has shown that adolescents optimally operate on a schedule that allows them to sleep later and stay awake later at night. This is contradictory to the school schedule that we currently impose upon American middle and high school students. The inadequate amounts of sleep that adolescents are encountering is leading to stimulant dependence and mental health concerns.

Students are expected to "hurry" through their day.

American teachers find themselves hurrying students along all day from one activity to another. The constant rush of the current school day is detrimental to a child's learning. Children do not have time to process new information before being thrown more information. In addition, children are being given the opportunity to rest and regroup before being pushed into the next activity.

More attention needs to be given to the basic developmental needs of children.

Less and less attention is being given to the basic needs of children, such as nutrition, hydration, rest, recreation, and exercise. Ignoring these needs is doing more harm to young children by forcing them to develop in ways that are contrary to natural child development.
