This is what we have organised so far for a potential format for our Matariki Evening this year and here is what we came up with:
1. Powhiri: We would like to have a powhiri in the hall to start off the evening. In the powhiri it would be great if you, and maybe a student, could do a mihi. Luckily enough we have had some practice for this already this year so we might tweak some things to make it better - maybe having a karanga (calling on) also?

In addition to this we would like to invite different groups from our community each year in an effort to reach out/involve our community in our school. It will also be an opportunity to educate people in our community about Matariki and what it is. I was thinking of inviting the Muslim Community Centre and another group that you could suggest?

2. Mihi: Dave and/or a student to do this. After this introduction for performance.

3. Performance about Matariki by J Geeks.

4. Eat: We will have a potluck to eat with everyone in the hall. I will also provide some food too.

Thats about it. How could we recognise those who have passed away in the last year too? Maybe a slideshow that runs while everyone is eating?? Or before eating we explain this and show a slide show and people sing a waiata during the slideshow? Thoughts?

I think the stars is a good idea. We could explain it after the powhiri and have it as an activity off to the side for those who have lost someone, maybe anyone who's lost someone close anytime can do one and those who have lost one in the past year get a differentiated one (e.g. gold outline or something).
I like the lights on the field idea, that would need to be done properly in line with Health and Safety.

Thoughts:

- different year groups/mini schools responsible for different foods, e.g. Junior School-Greens, Middle School-kumara, Senior School-Meat/fish??

- volunteers pre-organised to clean up? 

- bioplastic cutlery and plates for easy tidying - bins in place with people preorganised to sort them at end.

- I like the idea of a slideshow, but maybe hard to organise? Maybe not many in the past year, so a bit to focussed on a few individuals?

We want the day to be about our kids, our community and getting together to celebrate Matariki.  It’s going to be an awesome day. 
 
Our lecture room can only seat 50ish people, so probably only enough to accommodate the parents who are coming to support their kids.  We would love it if you would also like to do a couple of waiata inside the Visitor Centre.
