Character: The Littluns'

In the Lord of the Flies, Golding uses the Littluns to show how they are considered inferior and are blamed and taken advantage of by the older boys. The Littluns are all around the age of six and mostly eat all day and play. Jack states on PG 82, “you littluns started all this, with the fear talk.” This line depicts to how the Biguns began to pass out the blame of the conjuring of the beast once the Littuns became frantic. This is symbolic of how the Biguns take advantage of the Littuns due to there advantage in size and wisdom. This is apparent also in the modern day world with bullies in public schools. Usually the older and more intelligent children will pick on the younger and helpless kids. Another piece of evidence is stated on page 93 when Ralph says, “And an air-plane, and a TV set,” said Ralph sourly, “and a steam engine.” This illustrates how Ralph treats the Littuns like they should have no voice at all because their opinion is unrevealing due to their lack of intelligence. Ralph states this line with sarcasm to depict to the Littuns that their ideas are so worthless they should not be mentioned. This is another event in which the Bigguns take advantage of the Littuns. In conclusion these quotes are symbolic in the real world of older peers acting pompous and exposing the Littuns weakness to boost their own selves upward.

Theme: Fear of the Unkown

In the Lord of the Flies, fear of the unknown is used to show how all people shape their actions based around their fears. Golding uses this subject to show his world veiw of fear controlling society. A quote to prove this is, "'Fear can't hurt you any more than a dream. There aren't any beasts to be afraid of on this island....” (Golding 82) All the boys are fearful of the beast. It is a combination of all of the fears they have wrapped up into one being. The beast has controlled a lot of aspects of the boys life, they don't go on to certain parts of the island the beast might be on and they hold meetings discussing what to do when all along they knew it was apart of their imagination. The beast represents all they are fearing and Golding uses the beast to represent her fears. A another quote, “We can’t leave the littluns alone with Piggy. Not all night.” (Golding 117 ) This quote is explaining how the boys fears are minipulating their lives on the island. Fearing what they don’t know is the worst fear of all, the boy's imagination can create horrid dreams. These dreams can end up running and ruining peoples lives. The island had many unknowns and that is scarriest to the boys. Not only does fear dipict the boys actions, but in the real world fear can control your life and keep you from fufilling dreams.

In "The Lord of the Flies" Golding uses the beast to symbolize the different fears people have in society and how all people try to rationalize their fears. The beast causes chaos among the boys, it causes them to disagree and dispurse. The beast came from the littluns’ dreams, which after a lot of contemplating became a part of all the boy's reality. On page 85 a littlun says, “ And I was frightened and started to call out for Ralph and then I saw something moving among the trees, something big and horrid.” This quote depicts the conjoured up fear the boys created from their imagination this shows two things. One is the fact that the boys still have shreds of innoncence left this is because they are still imagining and fearing nonexsistent beings. On page 98 Golding describes Sam and Eric being frightened by the beast, “ Then as though they had but one terrified mind between them they scrambled away over the rocks and fled.” This quote illustrates the control fear can have on innocence children. It is able to consume all the thoughts in their mind. And in conclusion the Beast is just a figment of their imagination that they use to try to explain their fears.

Jack is animalistic and savage. Golding uses Jack in the Novel, "The Lord of the Flies", to show the extreme effects of being taken out of a civilized world. He also uses Jack to show his world view of the barbaric side of humanity. This is represented by this statement from Jack on page 91 , “Bollocks to the rules! We’re strong-we hunt! If there’s a beast, we’ll hunt it down! We’ll close in and beat and beat and beat-!” This quote illustrates that at first, Jack is obsessed with hunting for pigs and the beast, and does not show any signs of fear. As the boys time on the island lengthens Jack begins to become more ureasonable about his uncanny obsession with violence. In the text on page 115 Roger and Jack state this line to forshadow there uncontrolable violent actions , “You want a real pig,” said Robert, still caressing his rump, “because you’ve got to kill him.” “Use a littlun,” said Jack, and everybody laughed.” This statement illustrates Jacks personality by showing how he would sacrifice a littun just for his own personal amusment. He views the littuns' as useless and does not see the need for their presence. Throughout the pages of the novel Jack's personality shifts from a average hunter to a darker being,he transforms from desiring to murder pigs to wanting to murder humans.
